Courtesy of online resource Dengeki Hobby, we have some additional prototype images for the Takara Tomy Transformers Masterpiece Optimus Prime / Convoy 3.0 - yet unnumbered and unpriced - showing off both the robot and truck mode, with trailer, which are closer in rendition to the cartoon model used in the original Transformers animated series.

You can check it out below, with the machine translated description from the source, and join the conversation in the Energon Pub discussion boards!

In addition, it is said that a voice gimmick containing many voices of Teruaki Genda who was in charge of the voice of the first convoy is included. I am looking forward to it, but I will inform you about detailed product specifications with hobby web, so please look forward to it !!

I was annoyed at the release of mp10 as I was perfectly happy with mp1 and found some design choices on mp10 less to my liking. I eventually caved in and got mp10 and was pretty happy with him. Never had the trailer + the scaling with the new releases convinced my little brain it was worth the expenditure.

Now this... again it's a bit annoying considering the number of characters that would benefit more from Takara's attention like the remnants of the ark crew (+ I'm sure they can make a better seeker). He does look awesome and they finally seem to have nailed his legs. Will I get him? eventually.. but won't be a priority for sure.

Looks like they managed to tuck away the whole truck cab in his torso in robot mode, that’s a fake chest Prime has got right there.

I think these new super-cartoon-accurate MPs are cool, but that just feels like a cheap gimmick, juuuuust a little.

Sadly this is a pass for me since I own 4 versions of mp-10 not that this isn't nice but the only real upgrade here is the rifle an maybe the lower legs Since I bought all the different color variations of the mp-01 rifle off ebay which is still the best version of the gun I think I'm good.

I’ve been thinking this for a while...

I feel like Animation-accuracy might be a much bigger deal in Japan.
And that there really isn’t anywhere else to produce toys that are basically the cartoon jumping out of the screen, hence the new Masterpiece style (with G1, Beast Wars, and the Movies all very screen-accurate)

Sorry, if this has been pointed out. Just my two cents.

Definitely getting him. But please Takara, please offer him without the trailer. While I can never have too many Optimus robots, I already have two trailers and don't want another. If you only sell him with the trailer, I will grudgingly opt for the knockoff.

Unless, (I know this won't happen, I am not delusional) instead of the trailer transforming into the traditional battle/repair station (which never happened in the cartoon anyway) have it transform into something else. Maybe an oversized roller? Or a backpack? Give us something different and clever for the trailer.

But the transformations in the cartoon were cheap looking as hell with very little actual thought of where pieces actually go and how they should accurately look in each form. I guess sometimes the figure has to cheat to achieve the full toon look in the cases where actual real plastic and metals cannot contort. :P

These are my feelings right now about Masterpiece Optimus Prime 3.0. It looks great in robot mode (and truck mode too). I love how close Takara can get to screen accuracy with their latest engineering tricks. I will almost certainly be getting this next year, especially if Takara nails the colors. However, I won't be selling off my MP-10 Optimus Prime. It's also fantastic in its own way and achieves a great looking robot mode with much less "cheating," as some would say. There is room in my heart (and my collection) for both interpretations of the Autobot's most famous leader. Version 3.0 will probably be in the main Masterpiece display along with the rest of the cast, but MP-10 will likely get his own display elsewhere in my home.

I'm not happy about his face. It does not look cartoon accurate and it's just too boxy. The sides of his helmet are WAY too big compared to his mask! Hopefully it comes with an alternate head that looks nicer than this one.

this for instance (looks like Masami Obari was the artist here). Lot's o' styles but this one (version 3.0 ?) follows the most common by (?) either by Toei, Akom or FilToons/FilAnimation/ToonCity

"Cartoon accuracy" is dependent on whichever source they decide to go with. Just because it doesn't match one specific screen cap you find doesn't mean it isn't accurate to a bunch of other ways it might be drawn in other episodes (or even the same episode).

Yup! Pat Lee shamelessly "adapted" the style of either Masami Obari's or it could have been Satoshi Urushihara's art style.

They mean the KO will be cheaper and thus they could just ditch the unnecessary trailer without remorse

Whilst I'll agree that MP Grimlock is a bit dated due to predating MP-10 (though IMO engineering wise he's fine, he just needs to be bigger and ditch the static wrist) I dread to think what a new MP Grimlock would look like. Quite aside from anything else he'd ditch the gorgeous golden techno-greebles under smokey clear plastic in favour of flat yellow.

They'd never cost less and I figure they look fairly bland due to TT going so full bore cartoon accurate. I prefer my Dinos dripping with detail and chromed gold.

All right, wow. That's just insane! They're actually engineering cartoon accuracy into the thing to the point that animation compromises and mistakes have become transforming parts of the figure! The disappearing stripe in truck mode, the lack of wheels in robot mode... This seems less like an "all-around" Masterpiece Prime than a specifically "more cartoon accurate than you ever thought possible" Optimus Prime. I personally don't dig the amount of fakery that goes into recreating the cartoon stylings, but for what it is it's still seriously impressive.

Not really.. the model is drawn in perspective. (They also know to take references from the episodes and not just the models, which for the first season characters, were often refined later.)

To be honest, from the prototypes I do like the Takara Prime best at the moment, but I'm worried he's going to be the most expensive of the three after Beast Wars Megatron's pricing. I'm going to wait on color pictures and preorder prices before I make any commitments on any of these guys.

Yeah, but a lot of them have been copying Takara's design philosophy & esthetics resulting in similar toys. It's not like that other Not-Prime that was inspired by Studio OX with the wheels on his backside.. these are clearly meant to complement MP-36 Megatron. It actually doesn't bother me, just wondering out loud if they're wasting their time. These Not-Primes were probably in the works before the big reveal though.

I didn't buy MP-01. It was too big, clunky and I disliked the over all aesthetic.

I didn't buy MP-10. It was better than MP-01, but felt like too much of a "halfway house" between what I really wanted (cartoon accuracy) and the infernal MP-01.

I'll be buying this. Its beautiful. MP28 (Hot Rod) is one of my favorite toys to date and the one that finally has brought me into the Masterpiece fold, so its a long mountain to climb from here.

I was unsure of the figure until I had it in had, but finally grabbing one in January and having Transformed him a few times (which is actually quite intuitive, whilst adding extra complexity from the existing G1 toy, whilst also respecting the original toy from underneath) - yes, he's a firm favorite.

I've been collecting TFs for a good 2 decades nearly and Hot Rodimus MP28 has been one of the most enjoyable toys I've owned in quite some time. It helps Hotrod is one of my favorite characters, too.

On topic - Judging from BW Megatron are we staring down the barrel of a $300\$350 figure? My heart says "no", but my brain says "sadly so and bend over"

I'll be buying this. Its beautiful. MP28 (Hot Rod) is one of my favorite toys to date and the one that finally has brought me into the Masterpiece fold, so its a long mountain to climb from here.
MP-28? Really?
Judgement? Really? We're talking about toys dude. I have 90% of every MP released, and 28 is among my top 5. So yeah, he has fans out there.

I agree. MP-28 is one excellent MP. Leagues better than MP-09 for sure. Maye not as good, as say MP-12, or MP-20 But still top tier.

MP-28 hands down one of the best Autobot cars of the line. Sure MP-9 soured the line with all the QC issues but Hotrodimus took on the challenge and ht a home run!

Those putting the mold down don't know what they are talking about!

The so called "back pack" issue is a NON ISSUE. I challenge anyone else to design a fig even better! He's a near carbon copy of the 1986 character.

The somewhat disappointing (because Takara tried to put too much into so small a structure) was the Tracks mold.........(no neck lock is the worst part of the design).

The big reveal of Tokyo Toy Show was the new Masterpiece Optimus Prime. So, with Wonderfest Summer happening right now, we get to actually see this grey model on display. It is next to previously released Masterpiece toys like Sunstreaker and Ratchet and also next to newly revealed Hound, for you to better assess the scale. His tag still does not give us his MP number but it does have "(ver. 3)" as part of it's title, for identification purposes. We see both his robot mode and his cab and trailer mode. We also get a good shot at his back which surprisingly seems quite clean and a good take on his backpack in the G1 cartoon. We also see him with his shoulders kept more inside for a more narrow stance. The pictures come from Weibo and Twitter, and Dengeki Hobby.

Let us know what you think of this new Optimus Prime Ver 3! And keep an eye out on our site as we will be unloading more news from the show!

Proofreading: "assess", not "asses".

Still, very nice to see its scale. Also, MP Hound looks great!
