According to an article on ShanghaiDaily.com a 14-year old boy drank gasoline... for FIVE YEARS to mimic his childhood hero's: The Transformers. After watching an old episode of The Transformers where the robots consume fuel for sustenance the boy quickly developed gasoline dependency.
A 14-YEAR-OLD boy drank gasoline for five years to obtain "energy" - just as his idols "Bumble Bee" or "Optimus Prime" do in "Transformers," the Sichuan-based West China Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
After the boy, in Yibin City, southwest Sichuan Province, had watched the animated TV series, he began to drink gasoline to become a "valiant fighter" like "Optimus Prime," his father told the newspaper.
"He began to drink gasoline five years ago, when we found he liked smelling lighter fuel," he said.
The boy's mother owned a grocery stall, selling small goods such as lighters.
In 2004, she often found lighters missing two or three days after she'd bought them. She later found that her son had been stealing them.
The parents talked to their son and asked him not to do it again. "But afterwards we found our motorcycle's gasoline was always disappearing, and one day when we found the boy had drunk a half bottle of gasoline stolen from the motorcycle, we were too shocked to say anything," the father said.
IQ dropped
They locked the motorcycle away after that but the boy began to steal gasoline from neighbors and was drinking more and more - two or three bottles at a time.
"Since my son started to drink gas, his IQ has dropped sharply and now he can't figure out simple addition and subtraction," the father said.
"Before that, he was a very smart boy, and he could even repair the television. But now he does not know the answer of 7 plus 17."
The worried parents finally took their son to hospital where they were told the boy had a mental disorder and a strong "gasoline dependence."
"The gasoline contains a lot of lead, which can do harm to people's brains. To make thing even worse, the boy is in the physical development stage, and the lead has caused serious damage to his body," Peng Houquan, a doctor from a hospital in Yibin, said.
"Transformers" is now a Hollywood blockbuster movie franchise and the second live-action film is currently breaking box office records in China.
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has gained 400 million yuan (US$58.4 million) in the country, breaking the record set by "Titanic" 10 years ago.

Honestly.. I know I don't have to say this but I will. Please please please always watch your children carefully. It is up to us as adults to teach our children right from wrong and in a case like this, fantasy from reality.
Our thoughts and wishes go out to this family in what is no doubt a very difficult time for them.

Does China actually still use leaded gasoline? We haven't had that in the States since before *I* started driving. (NOT that I think it's much smarter to drink unleaded gas).
HK, okay, everyone, spread the word: it's *energon cubes*. Not gasoline.

I wonder what episode and what series. TF's normally consume energon in cartoons to avoid this i thought. (i know in animated they drank oil like beer but thats a whole different bad lesson)
Good think the kid didn't watch a Freddy or Jason movie and hack up all the kids in the neighborhood or watch superman and try to fly. Even as a kid i could differentiate a cartoon from real life. I think the kid was unbalanced and drank gas and the parents wanted in on recent transformers publicity.

I also highly doubt that he was thinking of Transformers every time he drank gasoline. You would think after the first or second time he could not transform after drinking it that he would realize he was not a car.

It boils down to this. Transformers is not a negative influence. This child has a disability and—for any number of reasons—was not able to get the appropriate help he needed.

Now had this guy first watched Beast Wars or Beast Machines, we wouldn't have this problem since both those series showed them eating organic foods (like fruits).
Though, I am curious as to which episode of which series showed them drinking gasoline that this kid was referring to.

Seriously, just ... wow. When i read the headline I thought the kid might have been 5. A 5 year old might mistake what make a TV robot go with what would make a real life human go, but 14? 14!? I think the parents are overstating exactly how smart this kid was.

Now talking seriously, you are not a robot and you are not a car, don't do it.
At least I'm happy he didn't see Spiderman, Iron Man or TMNT, in that case, it would have been really bad publicity for those franchises, because, to start with, nobody can't really relate at all with a giant f***ing robot that turns into a car.
Kids have become dumber because of shows like Bakugan and the music they hear. I'm 16 and everybody in high school is becoming stupid because of Twilight and HSM.
Watch a damn Pixar movie, now that's good. Unless it's Cars, in that case that kid will start drinking gasoline again.
On an interesting note, this is coming from the guys complaining about ROFT: China, especifically Shanghai, so the one who wrote that article probably invented the Transformer reference because he is a jerk.

LOL!
I live in asia folks (South Korea to be exact) - and the typical (not STEREOTYPICAL) asian parent mindset is reflected perfectly here.
Notice, it took the folks 5 years to bring the kid to a hospitol! Notice, the parents blame transformers!
I have found (since living here in 2003) that it is common for asian parents (OVER HERE) to hide problems from the public eye (such as a child who swills gas like water) - until they can find a way to lay blame on something else.
In asia, many asians prefer to present themselves as VICTIMS instead of taking personal responsibility. Takin responsibility for one's self/actions would cause your family to be dishonored. So, they lay the blame elsewhere whenever possible - again - IN ASIA.
Western mindthink tends to see people as individuals, responsible for our own actions (when adults). Completely differene here, ALL actions you do are a reflection on your FAMILY/TRIBE/COMMUNITY/COUNTRY. It's completely ridiculous.
In summary - these folks are makin the story bout Transformers up! Complete falsehood!

Heh... it's not that different here. There are plenty of irresponsible parents here in the U.S. who have placed the blame on Television and Video Games for their children's problems.

First off how the hell did this kid stay alive for so long? Drinking that much gas for that long he should've died. And what the fuck was up with the parents? They knew he was stealing fuel. Didnt they inquire into why? And how did they not notice a decline in the kids motor and mental functions? Did they even take him to the hospital when he drank the first few bottles of gas? I mean i dont have a kid so i really cant judge them to much but still common sense is common sense. If i have a kid and they ever drink gas or something like that even once im going to take him/her to the hospital and then find out why they did it. I swear if TF gets blamed for this im going to lose the little bit of faith i have left in humanity. God its frakin ridicules man. I will admit i like the smell of gas but did i ever think about pouring it in a glass and swigin it down? Hell no. But then again i have and use common sense. Besides it taste horrible any way(old mowers are evil, evil creatures). But seriously only in china right? What too soon? And the kid was obviously an idiot to start, its ENERGON not gas. There are only two episode to my knowledge that even show a bot using gas, in G1 it was when Firstaid left the bots (wait that was oil not gas) ok so one instance, in RID when Mirage was at a full pump. Stupid ass kid get your facts right. And one last thing, since he now has a dependency are they going to keep feeding him gas? I dont think you can go to rehab and get some pills for that? Can you?

Personally, methinks he would, should have caught cancer. 2-3 bottles at a single go and all he's gotten is an IQ dumb-down 5 years after? That's just unbelievable.
What I find especially bloody ridiculous is how the parents actually let him go on for 5 years!? Whatever happened to common sense? They shouldn't go blaming the franchise, they should grow backbones and blame themselves.
Idiot deserves a Darwin award but he's not exactly sterile at the moment, is he?
