Our 4th reveal for the BotCon 2014 Convention set - PIRATES VS KNIGHTS! This is our BIGGEST reveal yet. Olin, son of Zarak, and rightful heir to the Hive creation known as... SCORPONOK!
For the 30th anniversary we have pulled out all the stops and engineered from an existing mold the first Headmaster toy released in 25 years. Scorponok utilizes an original 1987 Headmaster mold, featuring an all-new cartoon accurate sculpted face, as the character Olin Zarak. To make the Headmaster function work, we also created a new rotating piece located in his chest cavity which, once Zarak is transformed, allows him to become the head of Scorponok in robot mode!
This is the centerpiece of the 2014 convention set. We have in hand samples and we are thrilled at what a remarkable toy he is. We can’t wait for everyone who wants one to get their hands on this amazing figure!
To check out Scorponok, be sure to click the “Con Exclusives” link to the left! We will have the BotCon Brochure and online registration available this month, so stay tuned for more toy reveals, guest announcements and all kinds of information regarding the biggest and best Transformers convention of the year, BotCon 2014!

My reaction:
And the Headmaster mold that was chosen for Olin is the G1 Spike mold from the Encore Fort Max release - https://twitter.com/BotCon/status/451771094773420032

Scorponok and Devcon are what BotCon figures should be all about. This is how you get butts in seats at a convention. Nice work. Kudos all around. Thank you BotCon!
Now about that registration ... any word on when we'll be able to register?

I'd imagine sometime around late April or mid-May.
Goddamn, this is one set that I really don't want to miss out on!

Then either this is the worst April Fools' joke ever time-wise, or you're being a little too cautious with this one.
I find it hard to believe that they would go this far with a joke, what with not one but two pieces of artwork of Zarak Jr., and all the hype built up around this character with tweets from BotCon's Twitter page and Facebook statuses from Tornado's Facebook page.

There is already a Black Zarak repaint of Energoon Scorponok. The only improvement would be the Headmaster modification.

Yeah But Scorponok dosen't scream pirate, after all that's 50% of the theme, Zone Black Zarak would have fit better.
Also that cybertron repaint's terrible a black zarak

With all the great figures they're making lately you can count Scorpinok out and Devcon for that matter. Sure he's not in the comics near as I can tell (I don't read them and only see the previews on here) but this kills any hope for one otherwise for a while.
Not exactly true. Kup, Scourge and the Sweeps, got BotCon figures in 2009 before their Generations releases in 2011.
In regards to this.. wasn't a fan of the mold and not really a fan of the character.

Excuse me while I scrape together $600 for an Iacon package and an extra bagged set.

And even then, its tiny size in proportion to his body would make him more viable as Dreamwave Scorponok than Marvel.
Would still love to try it though! Assuming they had that possibility in mind all along, it's like FunPub just gave the purple bitch-slap to Headrobots, who seriously should've done something like this for Scorp long ago. Did they already know about the Encore reissue back when they did all those Fort Max & co. upgrades? It's been so long IDR. I used to love those guys, but what's the hold up on that iguana?

What Arms Microns?WiseMan wrote:I don't care about the rest of the box set figures. The original G1 Scorponok is around $500.00 on eBay (really quick check). This one will probably be less than that, come with 4 extra exclusive figures not counting arms microns, and come with a comic?
Not gonna lie. I may have just peed a little.
BlackZarak's pirate armor was a one-episode-only deal. The majority of his screentime was in Masterforce, in which he was just a black redeco of MegaZarak plus a new noggin and spear.SW's SilverHammer wrote:I like it, though my question's why not Black Zarak, it fits with the pirate-y theme.
Scorponok, however, is more widely known and would likely sell better.
It's not the lifeless Scorponok mech suit who's the pirate here. It's the Nebulan Headmaster in control of him who is.SW's SilverHammer wrote:Yeah But Scorponok dosen't scream pirate, after all that's 50% of the theme, Zone Black Zarak would have fit better.
Why Dreamwave? He was barely in there save for one quick cameo.Bumblevivisector wrote:And even then, its tiny size in proportion to his body would make him more viable as Dreamwave Scorponok than Marvel.

I don't even want the rest of the boxed set but it's doubtful I'll be able to get Scorpy by himself for much less anyway.

Exactly my point though, two years later. No it wasn't as long of a wait for Classics/Generations Thundercracker, Dirge and Thrust but that's still quite a while to wait.

Here's hoping for some 3H era homages, or even some things that 3H hinted at but never delivered on like Transmetal Fractyl.

Bad for my wallet, because while I'll not be attending the convention, I *must* have this figure (don't give a flying f**k about the rest of the announced figures so far though, so they'll likely become kitbash fodder or something).
As soon as BBTS pops up with their preorders for the set, I'm all over it .

He clearly meant IDW Scorponok. It's not an uncommon mistake to get Dreamwave (DW) and IDW mixed up.

Though, I doubt this head would look that good on the G1 figure anyway since it would look tiiiiiny.

I'm thinking possible repaints into 3H characters:
Generations Rattrap into Packrat
Universe Cheetor into CatSCAN
Generations Arcee into Roulette and Shadow Striker
Generations WFC Bumblebee into Glyph and Tap Out
Apeling from Cybertron Beast Optimus Prime
hmmmmm
