Just WOW.
Now it looks like a strangled, drowned and plucked chicken.

The headsculpt is not what LB should look like, in either mode. To me that figure should look like his name sounds. Fast and lethal. If that makes sense.
IDK.....if i see him for a couple bucks on clearance then i might get him.
He has a charm about him though. I do like monstrous TF's so he could win me over.

HA! that's exactly what he looks like! Good call. He's borderline ridiculous. They should have named him Cutthroat instead of Lazerbeak because that's who he looks more like. IMO

This guy is actually growing on me. Although there isn't much transformation involved, though I like the extending neck and tail gimmickry. I'll have to see it in hand before making the choice...

I have Scorponok & his repaint in movie monster mode hanging with my Godzilla stuff.
This will fit right in with those guys.

and that is the only reason I'm excited for this. I actually wasn't until these recent pics, but I'm sure I can just leave the neck & tail in alt mode and fold out the wings when I want to! (plus, with the feet folded down he looks a little like a Metal Gear)

Really, this is precisely why I like him. What's more badass than a Godzilla monster? A transforming robot Godzilla monster. And from the context of the film universe, it really does make a certain amount of sense; Soundwave doesn't seem to have any sort of decent self defense capabilities floating in space, so his drones need to defend both him and themselves. Only makes sense to me that Laserbeak would be so tricked out.
I don't see what the complaints are about, honestly; his smaller, compact mode is a spitting image of Laserbeak right down to the head, albeit very Movie-verse-looking, which should be expected at this point. The only part that doesn't look like Laserbeak is his second bird mode, which frankly I'm glad we even have since neither Ravage nor Scorponok had proper alt modes. At least Laserbeak actually transforms into something completely different this time instead of not transforming into anything or just curling up into a ball and calling itself a space rock.

It's "bot/bird-mode" looks like the monster bird from the
the 1957 film "The Giant Claw".
The toy looks decent enough technically but 'dang'
it has a serious "3-bagger" of a noggin module.
I think it will look decent enough with my movie
Scorponok and Ravage figues on the shelf.

I can't tell if this is sarcastic or not.
I will say this though: the Cassettes were all dumb. The concept was dumb even in the 80s and the farther Laserbeak gets away from being a stupid ass cassette and the closer he gets to being a badass phoenix, the better.

Well, he didn't have to be a "casette", if you really wanted to contemporize that design, they can be data discs...
I agree, Michael Bay has kinda made things too wierd. WFC was the perfect middle ground.
Finally, i'm all down for a badass phoenix, but that ain't a badass phoenix. At best, its alt mode is cool, and the the beast mode is okay without the tail and neck+head.
I'm sure if FP made a laserbeak, it'd trump every iteration possible, while still being G1 enough.

Of course, I'm a huge fan of Kaiju, Godzilla-esque monsters, so I'm also pretty biased towards the goofy looking design here. It just screams 'Mecha King Ghidorah minus two heads' to me.
It also reminds me very much of this Kingdom Hearts enemy:

It looks like so many cool things to me that I stop caring how much it looks like Laserbeak at all.

Wow...everyone thinks I'm being completely serious today. I even put two smileys in there.
But I actually didn't mind the 80's cassettes. I guess this guy is too far away from the original Laserbeak even for me...the movie-lover change-embracer. I mean, I'll probably like the on-screen character, but this toy looks like junk.

if you pictures its wings inside of the fans, and its feet somehow molded into a track
Hasbro has the design rights to do what they want with there toys, sad to see that Laserbeak got little creative development.
Mechtech will have a turkeyshoot with this one
Posted by SKYWARPED_128 on March 14th, 2011 @ 8:06pm CDT
The alt mode looks passable, like a military UCAV drone...with bird feet.
I see the curse of ROTF Ravage upon this toy. It is evil.

All in all, his transformation is similar to that of ROTF Ravage in being that it just added something little and stupid so it could be called a "Transformer". Don't get me wrong, I liked Ravage and all.. but come on .. the transformation was weak... I'd prefer it turn into an 8 track than it just fold up into an "entry mode"
But yah... I'll get this guy if they come out with a better Soundwave than ROTF's so he can have Laserbeak, Ravage, and HA Barricade's Frenzy. wooooooooooo

I'm not seeing the big optics. I do see the red in the turbines though...the video game has redeemed itself in this matter, lol.
It's just the head that's really bugging me right now. I'd like to see a front view to get a better idea of it....

Wow… Now that I see a picture of it, you're right. (I wasn't aware this existed; I never really kept track of G.I. Joe.)
And I think this drives home the biggest problem with this figure: the alt mode is a poor representation of a vehicle, regardless of whether that vehicle is itself fictitious. The alt mode looks more like a slightly different bird robot than a human aircraft.
Laserbeak as a wyvern? Not my first choice; but not a major turnoff. An alt mode mode that looks like WTF-is-that? No thanks.

amtm wrote:I don't understand why it's so hard for the movieverse people to come up with designs that work in two modes. Scorponok was crap, Ravage was crap, Laserbeak is looking like crap, all the Megatrons in the first two movies and Soundwave have been crap, the Fallen was crap--how hard is it to come up with an idea like the new DOTM Megatron where the alt mode is something remotely believable, instead of just a folded-up pile of crap? They haven't gotten a single animal-based design that actually transforms, none of the "cybertronian" alt modes have been convincing, and the vast majority of the Decepticons have major flaws like bug faces, gorilla arms, and chicken legs. They need to let toy engineers design the bots and just spruce it up in their software for the 3D movie models.
dont forget the motorcycles....
sigh... im going back to beast wars... and classics

Now that he is correctly transformed he looks really good. His proportions might be his best feature, liflike if a robot condor existed in nature
His Alt mode is very cool, that attack helicopter like form with built in Thrust intakes. Takes memback to the helicopters in Avatar, now I'm starting to wonder if that is where they got the design from. What we thought was his head, turned out to be a detailed cockpit, and I can't tell you guys how much we dodged a bullet there.
The condor mode looks so cool, and evil. Like how Ravage was designed, Laserbeak seems to be getting the same treatment.
The only gripe with this guy are those stupid Playschool-Red wings. The wings look good and would comement the figure if Hasbro had just painted them black maybe even with some silver highlights.
So far the figure looks great, but I recommend to everybody to get this figure, paint the wings black, or something other than that hideous red.
Posted by OlivusPrime on March 15th, 2011 @ 11:43am CDT
But bot-mode... urgh. I expected some sort of spiky, razor-bladed arrow-head, not some clumsy-looking suffocating-chicken face. The chunky legs are distracting too. The worst thing is that I can't stop picturing this:
He looks so much better in the trailers for the game and movie, why does the toy look so crap?

In fact thinking about, Soundwave and all of his 'cassettes' have been rather poorly portrayed by the Bayverse. Yet another disappointing fail.
