BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at a college in Virginia on Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. The gunman also was killed, and more than a dozen other people were injured.
“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Charles Steger, president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, in southwest Virginia. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”
The shootings spread panic and confusion at the college, which is popularly known as Virginia Tech. Witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire.
Authorities said the gunman was dead after he shot nearly 50 people at two locations on campus. Twenty-one were confirmed dead, NBC News reported. At least 28 others were injured, at least four of whom were in critical condition, NBC affiliate WSLS-TV in nearby Roanoke reported, quoting local hospital officials.
The name of the gunman, whom witnesses described as a young Asian man wearing a maroon cap and a black leather jacket, was not released. It was not immediately clear whether he shot himself or was killed by police.
The man did not appear to be shooting at random, NBC News’ Pete Williams reported, quoting federal law enforcement officials. He appeared to have specifically targeted the two locations, a co-ed dormitory and a classroom in an engineering building.
Officials told Williams that they were investigating reports that the gunman may have chained the doors of the classroom closed so his victims could not escape.
No terrorism evidence
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at 7:15 a.m. ET at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people.
The campus was under lockdown, with students asked to stay indoors and away from the windows, when authorities got word of gunfire about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
Some but not all of the dead were students. One student was killed in the dorm, and the others were killed in the classroom, said Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.
FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, “but all avenues will be explored.”
Law enforcement officials said the gunman carried two weapons, a 9-mm handgun and a 22-caliber gun, Williams reported.
Until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby’s Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.
The deadliest previous campus shooting in U.S. history took place in 1966 at the University of Texas, where Charles Whitman climbed to the 28th-floor observation deck of a clock tower and opened fire. He killed 16 people before he was gunned down by police. In the Columbine High School bloodbath near Littleton, Colo., in 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.
After Monday’s shootings at Virginia Tech, all entrances to the campus were closed.
The university set up a meeting place for families to reunite with their children at the Inn at Virginia Tech. It also made counselors available and planned a convocation for Tuesday at the Cassell Coliseum basketball arena.
“There’s just a lot of commotion. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on,” said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.
Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode’s resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.
“They had us under lockdown,” Kanode said. “They temporarily lifted the lockdown; the gunman shot again.
“We’re all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what’s going on,” Kanode said.

I actually doubt that was the case.
But since he's dead it may be a long time before we know for sure.
I know, I'm just being general about some of the types of excuses the "shooters' use to do crap like this. "My mom didnt make me eat my brusselsprouts" or "that guy picked on me in kindercare, I think he and his friends should die"
I live in East County San Diego and we had the Santee shootings and Granite hills shootings within a month or 2 of each other and both of them were "boo hoo poor me" idiots and I cant stand it when people like that have little respect for human life.

I also attend college and I just can't help but imagine those events playing out on my campus (no, I don't think they will or anything like that). It's just a terrible thing to even think about. I mean, just what could set off a person like that? Even though it may be a while, I hope some connections or what not will come forth soon. Hopefully this was just an isolated incident (I'm confident that it was).

Sadly, people (politicians and such) will use this as a vehicle to get their own agendas in the spotlight.
I forgot to express my condolences to the friends and families of the victims in my last post. May God watch over them and help them in this terrible time of need.

You think they wont blame Videogames? Fist it was comics, then Heavy metal Music, then tv and movies, now games. They just want a scapgoat so they dont have to report on how his family treated him or how he was bullied in school. I agree i think its Bullshit that games are being blamed (again)but thats the "in" thing these days. I can tell you right now, games didnt do it. They might have influenced that coward on how he planned how he was gonna do it. But unless he did some kind of Metal Gear, Same Fisher sneaking shit then games had nothing to do with it. And also why the hell do they always kill them selves? If there gonna kill them selves do it with what ever honor you have left and stab your self in the gut while some one else chops your head off with a sword.

That's right, he doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the innocent victims that he murdered.

If for some reason he wasn't put to death he would have been killed in prison cause if there's one thing inmates hate it's someone who kills kids for no real reason

These nuts take people with them for all kinds of reasons. I don't know which is worse; the ones who kill them for percieved revenge, the ones who feel like they're doing them a favour, or the ones who have no reason whatsoever.
One person's death can touch dozens of people. Thirty-one will touch dozens of families. At a college, this atrocity will stretch its hand out over an entire nation. Maybe this guy just wanted to make as many people as possible as miserable as possible.

I am a Virginia Tech student who was on campus today.
I have been an avid reader of the site for years, although I do not post much.
I got in at 8:00 AM and was doing Homework in one of the engineering buildings. There are about seven engineering buildings as Tech is a big place.
I received an email about a "shooting incident" in one of the dorms, although information was sketchy and we did not know if anyone had been killed or a police officer's gun had accidentally gone off or what.
Then we got word of a second shooting and were forced to stay indoors away from windows.
This is a very unusual incident for Blacksburg. It is a VERY quiet town. I have lived here my entire life and my family has been here for generations (no, we dont get out much). Before this on average we would have maybe 1 murder every 5 years. There are no "gangs" - there have been one or two instances of graffiti but I would not say it is gang related. The campus is 25,000 students, but during the summer it is a town of only 5000. This is unprecedented and all of us in Blacksburg are shocked and saddened by these events.

Agreed, I wonder if that's true. I'm about 2.5 hours away from VA Tech and Blacksburg is a booming place. The town/city has gotten so big that it's grown into nearby Christiansburg. VA Tech has caused the place to grow exponentially and develop massive traffic and crime issues.
This is yet another reason why I hate Virginia. Most people here are superficial and ignorant. When I was in high school, mind you I'm 24, I laughed at all my friends who went to VA Tech because it was the "cool, hip place" to go. In this area, going to VA Tech is nothing more than a status symbol of wealth.
Obviously, I don't wish death on the innocent. But, who was the shooter and why did he do what he did? He obviously believed he had a good reason. I want to know more about him.
And I'll be honest, I'm not upset at the guy. Death is just another part of life.
I don't go by Thanos for nothing, I suppose.

As First-Aid said this is the worst shooting, in terms of number of people killed, in a School shooting in the States. It's something which seems to be more and more widespread now, though Canada, the UK and Russia in the last few years.
Well done to Ryan on posting this, I wouldn't have read about this until tomorrow (being in the UK), so now I know to get in contact with those from Virginia who visit our site.
The video they have, on BBC.co.uk, from the students phone, when you can here the gun-shots, is very eerie indeed.
Stats from previous shootings:
1 August 1966 - Sniper Charles Whitman kills 14 people and injures dozens at University of Texas
20 April 1999 - Two teenagers at Columbine High School, Colorado, kill 13 before killing themselves
21 March 2005 - A teenager on an Indian reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota, kills nine
