Alright, so this is in response to some confusion that we got with Hasbro's announcement earlier today for a new Optimus Prime toy. Now that the toy is out for us to see, people who claim to be in the know (we will keep the sources private unless they express otherwise) have said that this toy is actually part of the Rise of the Beasts toyline. Instead of a Rise of the Beasts toyline coming out in April, both waves will be out on shelves later this year in Cyberverse packaging. That would mean that Hasbro was able to stir the ship while the product was not at packaging stage yet. This would also let the retailers get the product they ordered and had prepped for in their planning of both their shelf space and finances, though at a later date than anticipated. It is also telling that we see the toy in the ad and not the packaging. Hasbro is being quick on their toes on this one.

If we are to believe all this, which is the most logical explanation for this toy, then we can start the fun speculation we were all giddy for with us getting hints at designs in the film from the toys for the kid centric line.

This Optimus Prime, for instance, becomes our first look at what Prime will look like in robot mode. It basically confirms that they are keeping the same model that we saw in the Bumblebee movie (further confirming that this is a sequel to that film, if anyone still doubted that). The alt mode is inaccurate to what we have seen on set, but then again, it does resemble an offroad racing truck and Bumblebee is getting an offroad upgrade in the film. So this is either a hint of what we could see in the film, or (more probably) of what could have been planned for the film at one point. We saw that many times in the past like in Age of Extinction with all the product for a dropped Silver Knight Optimus component to the film and Slash, a Dinobot that was also dropped from the film. It could also simply by a toyline only offroad theme to go with Bumblebee giving kids and parents something new and thematic while still familiar.

Also, this toy would/could be the Smash Changers Optimus Prime from the Rise of the Beasts line that we reported on a month and a half ago.

Smash Changers

This is a smart choice to not intimidate retailers.

That makes sense, but weren't retailers phasing out there Cyberverse spacing for EarthSpark then? Where do these go? Or are retailers going to make room for these instead of the Movie line, since that's no longer happening? In other words Cyberverse will take up the space meant for the movie line until the movie is released?

ImageI'm actually impressed. This looks much better than that unfinished mess we got in the Bee movie. Hopefully this design will transfer well to both the toys and the screen.

Yes, that's exactly what will happen. The movie being released or not doesn't really matter, what matters is the retailers get what they planned for and no one has to redo their plans (neither hasbro nor the retailers)

I guess? I feel using these toys for a new filler line unrelated to the movie or any media (like Classics back in 2006) would have been less confusing, but reusing an established line might save some money on packaging and advertisement; after all, the logo and packaging styles are already designed.

Yeah they are definitely trying to reorient this massive line in the most cost effective way. Not only is that line established in terms of design assets, but also in terms of expectations. Cyberverse is the young kids toyline, so that's what will be used for these toys which are made for your kids.

Remember the Bumblebee movie line? It was entirely aimed at kids with lot of gimmicks. Well the Rise of the Beasts line will mostly be the same. We saw the 3 step Optimus a month back and now we see Optimus Prime in a different scale along with Optimus Primal and a Tigatron accessory which serves as a weaponiser.

While the toys may not excite fans, what is exciting is that this is our very first look at Optimus Primal from Rise of the Beasts. Of course, it is likely that the final movie model will look different BUT this does give us an indication that they are being closer to the original designs than the Bayverse bots were in the first movie. It also gives us an idea of scale, meaning that Prime and Primal would be around the same size, as has been the standard scale of late. You'll also notice that this Optimus Prime toy also turns into the same off road truck mode as the previous toy. These should be released through the Cyberverse line this year. The Images come from a Chefatron review.

That Primal looks great even if it is super simple. Guess I'll be shelling out for Movie Maximals now.

Even this Primal has an interesting transformation to him. I really like him. Might just pick him up while we wait for thew actual movie line.

Tigatron relegated to a filleted crossbow... the indignity.

Anybody getting as feeling that the Legacy Bulkhead repaint is going to just be movie Optimus Prime? The similarities are uncanny.

Yeah, big similarities and we are indeed going to get a Prime redeco of Bulkhead, though I don't think it will be for the movie, since there aren't any voyager movie toys for ROTB coming out this year. I think it's just a coincidence.

As for the Primal toy, I too find that transformation fun. It's a total cheat but it works and I think my 4 year old will have a lot of fun with it.

This is getting me pumped for the eventual studio series figures, since that is one cool looking primal design. Also, I am surprised to see Tigatron, he wasn't said to be in the film nor in the listings.

Its too coincidental that movie Prime has such a similar alt mode. I know there are no large movie figures coming out this year as far as we know, but we also don't know when that Bulkhead Reduce is supposed to come out exactly. They may try something like the "Preview" or "First Edition" figures of previous movie lines.

Optimus Primal has a nice enough design, I wasn't expecting him to be this accurate to the original, but I suppose I should've seen it coming with how close to G1 the robots in Bumblebee look. Though his gorilla mode, namely the green eyes, the mouth and the shape of the head, looks quite a lot like Lockdown. I do hope the design of the gorilla in the actual movie changes as time goes on so it looks less like this.
I was surprised to see Tigatron here, I do wonder if he'll be in the movie or if he's just a toyline -only character. I'm also curious to see if he'll have a proper robot mode or if he'll just be a Battlemaster type robot like this toy.

It may be possible that Bulkhead was created to reuse the engineering (and slap out another Prime using the same engineering).

That Tigatron/crossbow would be pretty cool (and much better utilized) repainted or customized as a Catgut or Lionizer targetmaster/actionmaster weapon. Heck...even seeing it as one of the many cassette-cats such as Ravage or Stripes would be great as well. :D

Well, as a supporter of the franchise in general, I hope they do well. But I won't be getting any, unless I see better than what they've shown so far.

I was never a fan of the whole 'rotate the feet so the heel is the toe and the toe is the heel' thing. That's just lazy, no matter which line is using it. For this Optimus Primal, it doesn't look like they 'transform' the legs at all, except for spinning the feet around.

Always comparing against “Bayverse” designs. Some fans like me really love those designs. Can you try to be more inclusive of the fan base. If you have an opinion write a review…

Is it just me or does Primal seems to have more articulation than Prime?

Anyway, I kinda like these designs. Especially Primal; it's close enough to the original while still being its own thing and has a very Transmetal 2/technorganic vibe in beast mode. Just wish the robot mode had a bit more color, if only to better distinguish it from the gorilla.

Also, I don't really mind Tigatron being a Targetmaster. Part of what I love about Transformers is reinventing characters and concepts anyway, and there's always a chance there's a "proper" robot toy awaiting in the future (movie-wise, that is).

Also this. Kinda like the partners in AoE and Beast Hunters Construct-Bots, I guess.

He does. Probably because the belong to different classes.

Primal is very likely the Power Alliance version, while Prime is maybe the Smash Changer or some other as of yet undisclosed class.

Just going to be a wet blanket here and point out that these toys would be based on preliminary designs and don't necessarily represent the movie as per the usual with early movie toys. And given that the movie was pushed back a year they could be even further off.

Still seems like a good mini Primal figure though. I hope they give it a BW style repaint later on.

A few reviewers are getting their hands on these Rise of the Beasts figures. Prime vs Prime got some too. He was invited by Hasbro to attend the private event announcing the film, so his review does also compare the figure to what was shown then. But the part that matters most is that we now have a better idea of the scale of these figures. This Optimus Primal and Tigatron figure is supposedly from the Power Alliance Weaponizer 2-Pack (F4611), which is priced at $15.99. Regardless of how simpler he may be, that price becomes quite the bargain for a kids' toy when you see that it is the size of a standard deluxe class figure. Of course, it may be that this is not the correct class and that maybe even Tigatron does not go with this toy. We'll see when they are revealed (or more likely simply released) in the Cyberverse line. This also helps us make sense of the scale of the Optimus Prime figure we saw. Also, fans were quick to point out that this Optimus has the Bayverse blades, further showing that this new era of films/merchandise is building off of the Bay movies (afterall, he is still involve) rather than being a complete reboot. So we'll still see some references to the Bay aesthetic, be it like the blades on Optimus, or Bumblebee's face.

I actually like the head design a lot. It looks like a transformer. Not a human trying to be a Transformer. That always helps. :APPLAUSE:

There's... literally NO difference between the robot mode and the ape mode, except the chest/head piece being inverted, and the feet were rotated.

Uy. Hard pass on these so far...

That's just the basic gimmicky toy.

I'm looking forward the SS voyager.

I should take some notes:

Steal toys from company. Get invited to exclusive premiers.

Ok, got it! I now know the key to success! :-D

And the shoulders. There is almost as much difference here as with the original Primal who also kept the same arms, back and waist as the gorilla mode.

That's just Primal.

I mean, for a kid's toy it's honestly not that much of a surprise, especially considering most Primal toys aren't always that different between modes anyway.
Still, the probable SS figure will be a better purchase for adult collectors anyway.

True - it may be fine for a kiddie toy. But it ain't enough for ME ;)

I'm inclined to think now that the factories and probably Hasbro themselves are 'in' on it with this, to generate buzz for their pending figures. Otherwise, they'd be moving much more aggressively to stop these early leaks. Instead of inviting the primary beneficiary of those leaks over to root through their stuff with permission. Sometimes it really is who you know... ;)
