Greetings Seibertronians! Fans of Beast Wars need to take note of this, as IDW have given us our first look at their forthcoming Transformers Beast Wars comic! Special thanks to fellow Seibertron user, Sabrblade, for spreading the news in the forums.

The series will be written by Erik Burnham (of Transformers/Ghostbusters and IDWs own Ghostbusters series) with Josh Burcham (IDW Transformers ongoing, Galaxies and the three Wreckers books, and a lot more) on art duties. The series is set to arrive in February 2021 with issue #1. From the looks of it the core Maximal team is set to include Optimus Primal, Rhinox, Cheetor, Rattrap and a new character that looks to have a bat alt mode called Nyx. While on the Predacon side we only see Megatron so far.

There will be four variant covers at launch, three of which you can see below:

IDW wrote:IDW Celebrates 25th Anniversary of
Transformers: Beast Wars with
New Comic Book Series

Oversized First Issue Debuts in February 2021, with Story and Art by
Transformers Comic Alums Erik Burnham and Josh Burcham

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 9, 2020) – For an entire generation of Transformers fans, their first experience with “Robots in Disguise” was through the Transformers: Beast Wars television show, debuting in 1996 as the cutting edge of computer generated children’s entertainment. In 2021, IDW will honor the 25th anniversary of this monumental moment in Hasbro’s storied Transformers franchise with the launch of an all-new Transformers: Beast Wars comic book series!

Written by Erik Burnham (Transformers/Ghostbusters) with art by longtime Transformers artist Josh Burcham (whose credits include IDW’s ongoing series, Galaxies, the Wreckers saga, and much, much more), the new series will launch in February with a #1 issue containing 30 pages of story and bonus content.

The Transformers: Beast Wars comic series will welcome fans to a future Cybertron populated by scientific-minded Maximals and action-oriented Predacons. When the successor to the Megatron name steals a golden disk and a ship capable of traveling through time, only Optimus Primal and a team of Maximals — Rattrap, Rhinox, Cheetor, and a new character Nyx — can stop them.

“Beast Wars was a wonderful and weird pivot from the Transformers setup to which I was first introduced. Big personalities, unexpected twists, and actual stakes all popped up regularly on the show, and those are tools that I enjoy using to build new stories,” says Burnham. “Best of all, the enthusiasm from everyone involved in this project has been so high that I'm feeling constantly inspired!”

“I'm so thrilled to be a part of this team,” says Burcham. “I was a ‘90s kid and even though I knew about Generation 1, Beast Wars was really my G1. It's still my favorite iteration, and I consider it such a privilege to be able to bring the characters to life in this brand new series. Let the Beast Wars rage on!"

“Beast Wars is a beloved part of the Transformers legacy,” says editor David Mariotte. “That’s why we couldn’t pass up launching a new series in tandem with the 25th anniversary! Erik and Josh are going to take everything that’s beloved about Beast Wars — the characterization, the drama, the jokes — and start fresh with a series that will feel at home for fans of 25 years and first-timers alike.”

Transformers: Beast Wars #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Josh Burcham, Cover B by Fico Ossio (Optimus Prime), and two Retailer Incentive editions featuring art by Dan Schoening (Transformers/Ghostbusters) and Nick Brokenshire (Star Wars Adventures), respectively.

A Review of Transformers / Back to the Future #1

Spoiler Free-ish
Transformers News: IDW Transformers / Back to the Future #1 Review
RIP EVH

The first page of the first issue of Transformers / Back to the Future contains a letter from Doc Brown telling you, in so many words, to not take it too seriously. This is wisdom to take to heart, as this is another G1 crossover with a pop-culture franchise that's a quick read meant just for fun. Will you have fun reading it? Read on in this review to see if you, from the future, will tell you.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers / Back to the Future #1 Review
Beelieve? Anyone?

As mentioned, and as most readers probably expected after similar crossover books like Star Trek vs Transformers, Transformers Ghostbusters and Transformers vs Terminator, a Transformers cast very close to their G1 cartoon incarnations is back for more adventure. If you enjoyed those books you're almost certain to enjoy this as well, because the overall tone delivered by writer Cavan Scott is basically identical. The plot beats a drum somewhere between the aforementioned Ghostbusters and Terminator books so far, mingling lighthearted buddy comedy with Doc Brown and Marty with jumps around in spacetime to possible apocalyptic futures.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers / Back to the Future #1 Review
This is how long it takes lady robot characters to get toys

The focus feels like it skews heavier to the Back to the Future cast, but this is likely due to a somewhat limited Autobot presence throughout this initial issue. Whether or not the BttF cast is portrayed effectively or faithfully is outside of this reviewer's expertise, but I can say that what I remember of Marty, Biff and the others comes across here as expected. There does seem to be some expectation of reader familiarity with those characters moreso than with the Transformers, which is probably fair but readers of this site are in the one audience where that's not really a positive.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers / Back to the Future #1 Review
These are a page apart

Juan Samu returns to drawing the occasional Transformer here, as the other three of you that read IDW's M.A.S.K. series may recall. The linework is good overall though inconsistent, with one example being the two Soundwaves encountered one right after the other. Samu shows definite talent in depicting the transformation sequences in particular, so I'll be watching to see if he can nail down consistency in character proportions and tone down some of the overly exuberant facial expressions. David Garcia Cruz provides the colors with lighting and effects jumping out as a fantastic addition to the visual presentation of some scenes. Neil Uyetake's letter work never stood in the way and was easy to follow, though some of Gigawatt's narration was a bit confusing - there were times I thought it was Marty. The editorial duo of David Mariotte and Chase Marotz kept this initial issue's scope in appropriate check, as it features just enough progression to set up the rest of the mini-series while providing a hook for readers to return next month.

Samu and Garcia Cruz provide the art for the "A" cover which is featured in this review's news story thumbnail. Past crossover artists Philip Murphy and Dan Schoening deliver the "B" cover and 10 copy retail incentive cover, respectively, while a nameless Hasbro photographer's promo shot of the Gigawatt toy graces the 25 copy incentive. As always, you can find all the cover images, full credits for the issue and a list of all the characters that appear in the book through our Vector Sigma Database page for Transformers / Back to the Future #1.

Verdict
Transformers News: IDW Transformers / Back to the Future #1 Review
This isn't space!

Whether or not you'll enjoy this probably comes down to your attitude towards crossovers, affinity for the franchises aside. If you enjoy them and enjoyed books like the Ghostbusters, Star Trek and Terminator crossovers, you'll enjoy this. If you don't, or are starting to get fatigued by the constant appearance of only the G1 cartoon cast in these types of books, you may want to steer clear as I don't suspect this is going to do anything for you which earlier crossovers didn't. For this reason, two scores are presented below:

Final Score - "I think crossovers are just for, and really are, fun" Version

Death and Mayhem
A Review of Transformers vs Terminator #4

Very light spoilers
Transformers News: Review for Transformers vs. The Terminator 4
Bayhem is back BABY!

Last week marked the final installment of the Transformers vs Terminator comic and I have to say, this issue felt more bombastic than any Michael Bay movie. That's because this is done in fifteen minutes and it's just non stop action. You've got another classic Optimus vs Megatron Battle, you have Megatron vs Starscream, and the Terminator killing left right and centre with a bombastic finish. Plus you have quite a bit of Ravage thrown in, which is always nice to see from Alex Milne.

Transformers News: Review for Transformers vs. The Terminator 4What happens in the panel after this is pure nonsense

However, throughout the cacophony there is also some plot and I will be honest, I didn't get it. The writing was not the strong suit of this series, far from it. Since this is a Terminator story, there is a time travel semi paradox story to tell, kinda, and that part totally escaped me. Meaning that the end made absolutely no sense to me. And aside from a tease to what may come later, a good part of this comic really goes out of its way to say that this part is done with an ending that almost reminds me of Beast Machine's ending with a new tomorrow being born from the wreckage. Except if you don't really get how we got to the this ending, then you're just left bewildered.

Transformers News: Review for Transformers vs. The Terminator 4
Hey Bee, buddy, the Terminator just said he hasn't killed all Cybertronians yet, why in the world would you agree to help him finish the mission? You want the suicide hotline number?

Also, Optimus rapidly gets over the death of his fallen comrades, who he has spent eons battling with. It felt really insincere, like the writer had to address it and just dedicated a quick line of dialogue. I don't know what it is with Transformers comics in general, they are very tedious for a long bit and then wrap everything up in a larger than life sort of way that never leaves me satisfied, with writing that jumps around all over the place, never making the comic feel cohesive. It reminded me a lot of the opening arc of the Optimus Prime, or All Hail Megatron or even Stormbringer in structure. I know that last one has it's fans and so may this Terminator crossover but I am not one of them.

Back to the art, it's always a treat to see Alex Milne draw Transformers. He draws as many transformations as he could, almost like he is making up for the times he didn't on the Roberts run to the point where it feels unnecessary. For instance you'll have Bumblebee in robot mode in one panel and then soon after you see him transform from car to robot in the next. I do really wish the shadows were left to the colorist, however, rather than adding a grid pattern, it muddies the art.

Transformers News: Review for Transformers vs. The Terminator 4
Weren't you in robot mode on the previous page?

In the end, this was a well drawn short series that shows that the franchises can work together, I just wish it was better written overall. If you are going to write a yarn dealing with time travel, you have to make it simple and clear and I didn't get this here. In the end, my score for this issue is the same as the first issue and the series overall.

Thanks to Sabrblade, we know that there are new chapters in the online Transformers manga tieing into the upcoming Generations Selects Volcanicus release. You can see it below along with a ling to the English translation. Also, these comics are canon to the Japanese Generation 1 continuity and swerve as a continuation to the show (as do all previous chapters).

Sabrblade wrote:Next two parts of the Volcanicus comic:

TONS of cameos from the Siege and Earthrise lines, and even a few from Power of the Primes.

Plus, Grimlock combines with the Technobots as his limbs and Scattershot as a handheld cannon weapon to form a new combiner named "Volcaticon" (Volcanicus + Computicon; "Computicon" is Computron's Japanese name).

Sabrblade wrote:And here we go with the English text translation for both parts.

Cybertron’s Civil War Rages On in Five-Part Comic Book Miniseries

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 16, 2020) – IDW will expand the universe of the ongoing Transformers comic books with an all-new miniseries entitled Transformers: Escape, focusing on a handful of fan-favorite Autobots scrambling to save innocent bystanders from the war between Cybertronian factions. Written by Brian Ruckley, architect of IDW’s Transformers continuity since 2019, and illustrated by Bethany McGuire-Smith, Transformers: Escape is a five-issue monthly series slated for release beginning in December.

As Cybertron descends into a state of war, countless civilians — unaligned with the Autobots, Decepticons, or any faction — are caught in the crossfire. Fortunately, a solution may be coming, as Wheeljack, Hound, Nautica, and some of Cybertron’s greatest (and most infamous) scientists seek to reactivate the Ark program and evacuate the planet with huge spaceships. On the verge of war, will their efforts be enough to escape?

“Escape’s a cocktail of what I love most about Transformers, with some of my favorite characters and a few surprise guest stars caught up in a pretty epic escalation,” says Ruckley. “I’ve always thought it would be a pretty terrifying, bewildering experience for aliens – non-Cybertronians – to be caught between warring factions of big transforming robots. We’re exploring the question: Who are the most dangerous Cybertronians of all?”

“I'm excited to be working on this awesome chapter in the Transformers storyline,” says McGuire-Smith. “From the perspective of Hound and Wheeljack, we will see what matters most when so many lives are on the line… and whom they can really trust as multiple threats rise.”

“From the launch in 2019, the Transformers universe that's unfolded in the ongoing series and in Transformers: Galaxies has been about showing Cybertronians from exciting new perspectives,” says editor David Mariotte. “That's why we're thrilled to have Brian Ruckley and Beth McGuire-Smith reuniting to dig into the lives of faces both new and familiar as war breaks out and how they respond to the other inhabitants of Cybertron.”

Transformers: Escape #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, each by an established Transformers comic book artist. Cover A features illustration from series artist Bethany McGuire-Smith, Cover B from Winston Chan, and two Retailer Incentive editions feature art by Sara Pitre-Durocher and Alex Milne, respectively.

For information on how to acquire copies of the Transformers comic books, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

We Selectors were built to be slaves for the humans!

They force us to work!

PANEL 10
Rung petitions MEGATRON as NIGHTBIRD watches.

RUNG
We are just as much super-robot lifeforms as any Autobot or Decepticon.

RUNG
Why are you free when we are not?

Panel 11
Rung burns with righteous anger. Can you blame him?

RUNG
You were once the slaves of your creators, the Quintessons! And you threw off their yoke in rebellion!

RUNG
We too wish to drive the humans from Earth and take our own freedom!

Panel 12
Megatron looks down on Rung.

RUNG (Offscreen)
Lend us your power!

Panel 3
Closeup on the professor.

ATARI
It’s just… Some robots have been having negative reactions to the substance.

ATARI
I personally oppose its use.

Panel 4
Flashback to the destruction of UNICRON.

CONVOY (V.O.)
Indeed. It came from within the body of Unicron, the Earth being bathed in it following his destruction years ago.

CONVOY (V.O.)
Even now as it’s been unearthed, my doubts remain…

Panel 5
Convoy meets with his old friends SPIKE and CARLY WITWICKY as he is served by some Soundbarriers, who seemingly don’t mind being servants/table/chairs/walls.

CONVOY
Spike… Using Angolmois like this…

SPIKE
You’re not a fan, I can tell. But if we didn’t have Angolmois we couldn’t live as we do now.

SPIKE
I don’t think anybody could throw this all away.

Panel 6
Convoy looks down at the floor of Soundbarriers, visibly perturbed.

CONVOY
As for using the Selectors as walls and floors…

Dinobot Island! Of course, the island’s energy has been used for time travel before.

CONVOY
The excavation of Angolmois Energy must be the source of the disturbance. We must contact the Dinobots immediately!

Panel 9
Carly cheerfully takes the mic, to Convoy’s surprise.

CARLY
Oh, leave it to me! I haven’t had the chance to talk with them in ages.

CONVOY
Carly! Right, I seem to remember them being very fond of you.

Panel 10
Carly puts out the call.

CARLY

What’s new in Transformers comics this week - 9/2/2020

It’s new comic book day again, the first in September, and we find ourselves here with a slew of new comics fiction to chew on and enjoy.

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2

This week’s offerings include Transformers My Little Pony Friendship in Disguise #2, Transformers Galaxies #9, and Transformers 84 Truth and Lies #3. All 3 issues feature several covers some drawn and colored by IDW Transformers heavy hitters, for your collecting specifics.

No local comic shop? You can conveniently order them from the Seibertron.com eBay store!!!

Mini-Review of Transformers 84 Secrets and Lies #3 (Tigertrack)

This issue really had me at hello…as soon as Counterpunch said, “Megatron and Shockwave BOTH sleeping with the fossils…” like he’s a stereotypical 1920’s gangster stooge. I knew we were going to get to focus on some new (old) Decepticons. And that’s exciting, capiche?

Yes, this issue really more than the last issue goes it’s own direction and fills in details revolving around Straxus, Scorponok, and Thunderwing before they get their future moments to shine. Reminiscent of the IDW’s earlier Stormbringer mini-series bringing these big cons together (along with Shockwave) to discuss Thunderwing’s science, this issue tugs at those fond memories of that series, as these cons basically divide Cybertron.

That’s not all it has in common with that series. At the request of our spy-ally, Punch, our friends the Wreckers make their origin appearance. It’s nice to have the definitive start, and thankfully, it comes about a bit unconventionally. I was thinking they were started by Emirate Xaaron, Kup, or Magnus, maybe even Impactor, but I was at least, mostly wrong - Or at least by Punch's possibly skewed point of view, anyway. And that my friends is amazing, as well.

Just waiting on Ralph...I hear he really likes to Wreck-It.

BUT NOT ONLY ALL OF THAT… a little bot by the name of Star Saber makes an appearance (no misrepresenting cover syndrome here). I could go on, but I might ruin EVERYTHING, and you guys have to have something left unspoiled, right?

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2
Cons to the left of me, cons to the right of me.

I can’t say enough how I love what Guido Guidi, and John-Paul Bove are doing with the art here. John-Paul shared via twitter his process and just how much effort and time it took to research and experiment to come up with the coloring and shading as he did, working to mix colors to get the original look, but with a little bit more modern twist. Phenomenal… And I will say his name one more time since I messed it up before, well done, John-Paul Bove (super-kind and forgiving individual, btw).

For the 3rd of 4 issues in a mini-series, I think this one has been my favorite so far, which is hard for 3rd issues to do. It did something with characters that I wanted or expected to see happen, perhaps in the Regeneration series. Didn’t happen there, but here it is! Good on you Guido, Simon, and John-Paul, another entertaining issue. My only teeny tiny quibble with the issue was for me there was no clear cut cover that I really wanted. Nick Roche and Casey W. Coller’s were too similar, in an inverted kind of way, so I am going with the regular cover by Guido Guidi of commander Star Saber! Plus plenty of other cool cameos and story additions that I don't want to entirely spoil. Think opposites of the Decepticons presented, and the Autobot I just mentioned.

Mini-Review of Transformers My Little Pony Friendship in Disguise Issue #2 (Tigertrack)

Welcome back fans of kindness, silliness, and friendship! If you were hoping that Issue #2 would pick up where Issue #1 left off... I'm sorry, that's a different comic. Instead, we have two new crossover stories following entirely different cast members from each of these unlikely collaborators; the Transformers and the My Little Pony-ies.

Broken into two short stories like last issue. These stories are not disguising any silliness.

The first short focuses on Grimlock, who did appear for a moment in the first issue, left behind as the other Autobots headed to Equestria via the dimensional spacebridge.

This short sees Grimlock battling Devastator on Earth defending the ark from the those dastardly, cunning Constructicons. The dinosaur leader finds himself allied with Spike, a spunky, smart dragon and royal advisor in Equestria. Spike finds himself in a perilous situation after Grimlock is punted and squashed into submission. And the ending leads to a nice new friendship, and excellent, feel good message.

Me Grimlock, butt kicked!

The 2nd story is the Equestrian equivalent of a Food Network culinary chef show led by cute as a button pony, Pinkie-Pie.

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2
Shockwave is ready to..."mix it up."

The surprising part of this is not the odd partnerships of ponies and robots, BUT the inclusion of brand new Transformers star Gauge. She's featured in Galaxies and also seems to be quite a successful chef, as well. Shockwave shows up as Gauge's foil, ready to -in a very twisted Grimm's fairy tale kind of way- see how many ponies it takes to make a pony-powered energon smoothie. It's another fun, silly story with more than a few slapstick moments. Gauge and Pinkie-Pie beating Shockwave on any day of the week is far-fetched, but the chuckle moments are many and it just adds to the story's expected over-the-topness.

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2
"BAAAAMMMM!!!...time to KICK it up an notch."

Stay to the end, so you can experience the fun cultural 'food' exchange. :)

4 :HASBRO: out 5 :HASBRO: ! It had a dinobot and combiner!

Mini-Review of Transformers Galaxies Issue #9 (william-james88)

Full of spoilers below.

This is the story that closes out the Gauge, Greenlight, Arcee story. I'd say this is the best of the recent issues in this Galaxies arc, but there is still a lot to be desired. This is basically the story of someone who was indoctrinated into a cult and then rebels against the cult leader. What is tough here is that we the audience clearly know that Arcee and Greenlight are good guys and the cult leader isn't, so when Gauge talks about conflicting emotions and ideologies that battle in her mind, there is no conflict going on in the reader's mind since we know where she will side with. And even though Gauge states that she must become her own person and not listen to either side, we know that's also bogus because there isn't enough character development for her to be more than a "good" bot.

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2

I do like that Heretech was fleshed out in this reboot. While he was a James Roberts character, we saw very little of him (though I did make the most of it by breaking down a James Robert script page starring Heretech and Megatron in gun mode). He is of course very much a copy of the cult leader archetype trying to make every drink the Kool Aid but I think that's fine since Transformers fiction is always incorporating archetypes into the Transformers world/lore.

Transformers News: Quick Reviews of Transformers Galaxies #9, Transformers 84 #3, and Transformers My Little Pony #2

Thew best part of the issue, and why I think a Transformers fan should look into it, is the final fight with the three heroines and Heretech. It is almost fully in alt mode. So not only do we have transformations in a Transformers comic, but we see how the alt mode can be weaponized. Heretech becomes a drill tank, which is a vehicle very dear to the heart of Transformers fans. I also like the callback of him (wrongfully) thinking he is the chosen one and becoming the same vehicle that Rung was forcibly converted into in the James Roberts comic book run. Both lend to the theme of false beliefs, lies, heresy and not being the chosen one after all.

In the end, this was fine. Not amazing or groundbreaking, but I still enjoyed it and appreciated seeing more Heretech and drill tanks.
