The latest announcement from TFCC about Botcon has and will continue to be a subject of much speculation amongst the fandom as discussions rage over which molds will be repainted into what and what we should expect in this new addition (Or should I say expansion?) to the TF universe. But that happens every year and once again, we find that this year will be no exception!

Those of us that grew up in the 90’s remember 2 Transformer lines. The revival of the US portion of the franchise that was Generation 2 and Beast Wars which many fans hold dear for its unique twist on transforming robots with the use of organic structures and blurring the lines of what we expected a robot to be. I also can’t forget to mention just how awesome the Beast Wars story was, but that’s not the point of this article.

Where exactly does Machine Wars fit into the 90’s? Besides the rather limited launch of the toyline, I believe it can be accepted by the fandom at large that we really have no idea where the story of Machine Wars fits into the franchise as we know nothing about it beyond what is given on the toys bios. Given that, I think that is a pretty good reason to see Machine Wars make its way to Botcon and possibly shed some light on their untold story.

Now let’s focus on the toys that Botcon 2013’s theme is now based on and hopefully fuel the excitement for our yearly pilgrimage to the convention. Machine Wars was a line that was entirely exclusive to the now closed Kay Bee Toy store consisting of 12 figures. 4 large sized figures were made that were repaints from previous molds used in the European G1 line. Despite his lack of an Optimus Prime head, the Thunderclash mold found itself bearing the colors of Optimus Prime as well and Sandstorm was given new life with the Rotorstorm mold.

Machine Wars Revival

For the large scale Decepticons we find ourselves with a Starscream that is so wildly out of scale with the set that anyone who bases their collections on scale will most likely have an aneurism just by looking at him compared to the Megatron of this line. However, those that fear GPS on their Euro-exclusive Skyquakes were able rejoice with Starscream by not having to worry about him crumbling to dust in their hands. We also get a unique take on Soundwave which used the Predator Stalker mold.

Machine Wars Revival

And lastly, the line is rounded out with 8 basic sized figures using 4 unique molds which were originally intended to be part of the G2 line up, but found themselves cancelled during the switch to Beast Wars. However, we can most likely give a nod to these molds as being the ones that helped spur the engineering of much of the early Beast Wars that used the flip changing technology in which the simple pull of a lever was all that was needed to turn a robot into his disguised mode. For the Autobots we have Hoist, Hubcap, Mirage, and Prowl. And the Decepticon basics received Megatron, his clone Megaplex, Skywarp, and Thundercracker.

Until recently, the 12 figures that made up this line have almost faded away into the darkest corners of Cybertron’s archives, but with Botcon now approaching us along with the inevitable figure reveals, it’s time to go back and take a look at these relatively unknown and somewhat mysterious figures. As a proud owner of a complete Machine Wars collection, I can genuinely say that I am excited to see the direction that Botcon is taking this year by giving the Machine Wars a story that goes beyond just the bio cards found on the 12 toys. Please feel free to take the time to look around Seibertron’s galleries and take a look at some figures that you either may have not seen before or didn’t pay much attention to until now.

CHOSEN ONE

SPOILER FREE
(CONTAINING SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS RID ISSUES, HOWEVER)

It is quite the whirlwind this week for IDW Transformers comics this week, as their two biggest titles hit the shelf this Wednesday. My first review is for Robots In Disguise, and time certainly flies as we're already on the 11th issue. It has been a handful of weeks since we've been in the forefront of Cybertron politics as the RID Annual and the time travel filled Orion Pax RID #10 were the recent additions from Barber and company. To summarize our latest happenings with Bumblebee and friends, the Metrotitan, first discovered by the crew of the Lost Light, made its way back to its motherplanet, Cybertron. Before imploding due to unfortunate circumstances he had one last phrase; Starscream is the chosen one. Plot twist!

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots in Disguise #11

I think one of the biggest griefs some fans, including myself, have with the previous Robots In Disguise issues is that they tend to force the story to fit within the 22 page limit. While I am not the biggest fan of cliffhangers (the predecessors of both MTMTE and RID were full of them), I think comics are successful when they mix good story telling and make you yearn for more. At last I feel that Robots In Disguise #11 has hit the bullseye and is now on par with MTMTE. This issue feels like Barber's best!

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots in Disguise #11

I can't say that I was in league with those that thought RID would improve, but with hindsight, each story has been setting us up for what we have now. Whether this is our only climax in this series, or the first of many, we're being treated to some great characterization and storytelling.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots in Disguise #11

One of the characters that I felt that had mistreatment in past issues (more in regards to just being hindered from using their true capabilities) was Arcee. In the IDW continuity, I think it's common knowledge that you shouldn't mess with Arcee. By the end of the issue, well let's just say that you really, really shouldn't mess with Arcee. She steals the show from Bumbleebee, Prowl, Starscream and 'hawk.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots in Disguise #11

Ultimately, this is my favorite RID issue so far. The art (Guido stepping in for Griffith), storytelling, plot, dialogue, action and cliffhanger set this apart from any issue so far. Get it!

Sure, it's not an official Hasbro product, nor is it actually meant to be a Transformers product at all, but it is a 1:1 replica of the actual golden disc that made a guest appearance in the Beast Wars cartoon.

This is a 1:1 replica of the Golden disc mounted to the Voyager Spacecraft that was launched decades ago and has left our solar system only a short period of time ago. This disk has been brought to life again by Artifactory Replicas.

This disk has found its ways into the clutches of the Predacons and ironically was returned to Earth in the distant past only to meet with destruction at the hands of Dinobot. This 1:1 scale replica can be purchased at site sponsor BBTS for $150.

Want to own the Golden Disk from Beast Wars?

The official product description reads as follows

Artifactory wrote:The Voyager 1 and 2 missions featured some of the most ambitious unmanned spacecraft ever launched. As part of this program, each probe carried a golden disc similar to the long playing phonograph records of the time. Pressed onto each disc were sounds and images from Earth.

The contents were chosen for NASA by a committee chaired by Dr. Carl Sagan of Cornell University. A cover plate for the "golden record" was designed to protect against micrometeorite bombardment in deep space. A diagram engraved in the plate gives the eventual finder of the disc the key to playing the record.

Artifactory brings you an exact replica of the record cover and its famous interstellar welcome signs. Our replica is machined from metal alloy sheet and features all of the correct engraved markings. A detailed document accompanies each replica, explaining the meaning of all the markings. Each replica disc comes permanently attached to an attractive wall display plaque.

Diameter: 12-1/8"
