Me Grimlock Bootleg!

Thanks to my officemate, and fellow CybPH member, Hellrazor for an awesome surprise.

He gave me this old Grimlock bootleg this morning!

Image

I remember when these bootleg Dinobots came out years ago. I still feel like kicking myself for not buying some of these. The colors may be a little off, and the plastic is your typical brittle bootleg quality, but it still looks good!

T-REX MODE

Image

As you can see, Grimlock is pretty solid and stable in T-rex mode. The whole design is pretty faithful to the cartoon version, and while the colors were changed, the head still retained the original color.

Image

Another noticeable change would be the arms. Or as Grimlock would say it "Me Grimlock have beefy dino arms!"

And what kind of T-rex wouldn't have an articulated jaw?
Image

ROBOT MODE

Image

The weapons are still complete.

In Robot mode, the different colors are now starting to bother me. While the T-rex is intimidating enough, the robot mode is on the thin side. Add to that this clownish color scheme and Grimlock looks like a joke.
Image

Also, the toy is pretty old, so some joints are a bit loose. unfortunately, the legs are one of the loose parts. Being top heavy, this bootleg can't stand on its own

Image
Beefy arms - either you love 'em or hate 'em.

Another thing I noticed is that the head is too far back. Grimlock looks weird when viewed from the side.
Image

ROBOT MODE OR T-REX MODE?

Definitely T-rex mode. T-rex mode is cool. Very cool.

Image

PROS

- faithful bootleg of the original
- solid and stable t-rex mode

CONS

- beefy arms (does not bother me, but this can be an issue with purists)
- some loose joints
- brittle plastic

RATING

3 and a half out of 5

Pretty enjoyable bootleg, especially in T-rex mode. If you see one, definitely pick this one up. The only thing I'd repaint here would be the red parts in robot mode.

T-Rex mode is like that for the real G1 Grimlock too (in terms of proportion and the head beign too far back). I like how WSTF Grim has his head with the ability to move forward some.

Whoever cooked up the bootleg obviously wasn't a fan of puny T.rex arms. This Grimlock looks like a prize fighter.

Quite hideous in 'bot mode. I'd have to take some gold and silver paint to him before I could stand to look at that.

Between this and the Ceratosaurus-style Grimlock posted yesterday, there's more dinobot knockoffs than I had realised.

true. the pics don't look it, but the majority of the body is green, not greenish-gray. so a red/yellow/green robot grimlock screams "circus clown" more than "badass warrior."

Yeah.. I can totally see that. Afraid he only gets respect in rex mode.

I love the last pic. "Me, Grimlock, eat fake legs for KO Soundblaster and/or KO Perceptor!"

Long live cheesy KO's, baby.

Those arms aren't technicly new. I recognize them from the Tyrannosaurus Zord:

Having the orignal Megazord since I was a kid(eh, tenish) helps too.

And the original Megazord is awsome. It was the second Megazord I got(got the Ninja Megazord first....toys were on the shelves longer back then weren't they?), and it is still pretty cool. Much cooler than the Ninja Megazord. Heck, I still have all the parts for both.

Good eye. My bro had that Zord and I never made the connection.

Is he transformable?

He transforms into the torso section of the Original Power Rangers Megazord. But no he doesn't have an independent Robot mode.

What I'd like to know is how the Mastodon wrapped around him to become the arms? Anybody that own the Mastodon care to post some pics up. I'm very curious.

The real one's head is that far back. But man those arms are a riot! Me Grimlock fan of Jay Cutler. Me watch olympia contest and take lots of deca and test! Me have big meaty arms.

The bottom part of the Mastadon splits in half, and comes around the body:

the zord's arms on grimlock looks like an improvement. Keep KO grimlock in T-Rex mode and give him a repaint.

yeah, i'm keeping him in alt mode. not sure about a repaint, though. it looks cool so far in a mid-90s TF kinda way :D

The way they combine is cool. Some TF combiners can adopt this style.
