Maverick also comes with two guns a volleyball, two alternate hands so he can mess around with the latter and a mini motorcycle to he'll recreate one of the iconic scenes from the first movie.

Here's the official press release from Hasbro:
TRANSFORMERS-TOP GUN COLLABORATION INTRODUCES ALL-NEW ‘MAVERICK’ ROBOT CHARACTER – AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER TODAY!

‘More than Meets the Eye’ Takes Flight

in Celebration of the original TOP GUN Film

PAWTUCKET, RI – July 13, 2020 – Feel the need… the need for speed! Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS) and Paramount Pictures today revealed the first-ever TRANSFORMERS-Top Gun collaboration, starring the all new character MAVERICK. Not to be confused with Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, this new TRANSFORMERS robot makes an ideal wingman, taking form as the iconic Northrop Grumman F-14 Tomcat® jet from the original Top Gun film. This nostalgic Top Gun mash-up MAVERICK robot marks a celebratory moment ahead of the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic original film, Top Gun: Maverick, releasing December 23, 2020.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

TRANSFORMERS Autobot MAVERICK stands at 7 inches in robot mode and can convert from robot to classic Northrop Grumman F-14 Tomcat® jet mode in 25 steps (The F-14 Tomcat is a registered trademark of Northrop Grumman, and is used under license). He includes a screen-inspired miniature motorcycle accessory and 2 alternate hands that can hold the included volleyball accessory. This bot is always ready to go vertical in jet mode or dominate a slow-mo volleyball montage in robot mode. This MAVERICK robot figure also features folding jet wings, movie-inspired details, including a helmet design inspired by the 2020 Top Gun: Maverick film, and includes 4 missile accessories that can be mounted on figure’s arms in robot mode and under wings in jet mode. Even the packaging is inspired by the aircraft carrier!

TRANSFORMERS robots have always been more than meets the eye, but now, through the TRANSFORMERS Collaborative, fans can experience these larger than life characters as they team-up, mash-up, and meet up with other characters, teams and people who share this same special quality. It is a world of constant change where things are not what they seem.

The MAVERICK figure is available now for pre-order at HasbroPulse.com, while supplies last.

So far there's no word on any accompanying media like there was with the Ghostbusters and Back to the Future crossovers.

Will you be feeling the need to get this figure? Well get a Pre-Order in from Hasbro Pulse now!

Looking forward to this? Let us know in the Energon Pub and stay tuned to Seibertron for all the latest news and reviews!

Already went and preordered one to avoid another Gigawatt fiasco (thank God it’s on Pulse and limited to one per customer), but yikes... $50 for what’s essentially somewhere between a Deluxe and a Voyager. I like the general look of it but it could be more refined I’d say. Hoping between now and the final product that the robot gets more color.

I can totally see this being retooled as a GI Joe Skystriker, but granted it’d probably look too much like the same as Maverick to even justify making one, unless they make it in the colors of laterday Skystrikers (the dark colored one from a few years ago for their 50th anniversary comes to mind). Still hoping for a Cobra HISS Decepticon!

That jet mode is stellar. I'm not too keen on the plastic they used but I do like the attention to detail with the weathering patterns; naval jets get absolutely filthy and beaten up to hell and back with the salty air after all. The robot mode looks good too, kinda giving me major Valkyrie vibes actually. Appropriate given the VF-1 Valkyrie is pretty obviously based on the F-14 (though Macross actually predates Top Gun by 5 years!).

His robot mode looks rather plain.

...

Wait, did they do that on purpose so that we could make that pun? 8-}

I want to like this more then I do, the plane mode is fantastic but the robot mode isn't as fantastic... Though the head is, imagine though if the head was titan master compatible like Nitro Zeus was :-?

So I pre-ordered right away, but I think I've over half way talked myself into cancelling already. Jet mode is stellar, bot mode is not, but the head is nice. Looks to be Voyager, so why the $20 markup instead of the $10 that Ectotron and Gigawatt received? The timing also isn't great in that I have a crap-ton of pre-orders due in October (sorry wallet).

Ok I ordered it... Why> Cuz as a Gen X'er I have become a sucker for nostalgia, especially when it comes to cross overs (I am looking at you Alien/Pokemons lol). I cannot help feel a bit duped though... $50?? Just from the pictures I can tell the plastic and design are very "Cybertron" -like... as in light plastic and hollow body parts. That's cool for a $10 figure intended for small children, but this really should be some Studio Series level stuff here... With the exception of the F-14 mode and the head sculpt....meh.

The fighter mode and head is what really sold me... If ONLY they could've gotten McDonald-Douglas to ok the F-4 Phantom for SS Blitzwing!!! Ugh....so disappointed with that Jet mode. Hasbro has been pumping out F-15's for years, you would think they could get the ok for the F-4... BUT I digress.

So I ordered it... not sure how I feel about it lol.

not really feeling this one. Jet mode is fantastic, but robot mode, not so much.
However, I cant tell if this guy is retooled from anything else. maybe ss helicopter dropkick?

If this guy is a new mold, could he be retooled into somebody else? and if so, who?

1. Did you mean Cyberverse? You have clearly never held a Cybertron toy in your life if you make that mistake.
2. Looking at the photos, the only obvious hollows are in the forearms, where the hands fold away. Cover panels for that have long been a luxury design-wise.
3. News-flash for you, buddy: Everything these days, Studio Series included, uses lightweight plastic. If they didn't, regular deluxes would cost $40.
4. Funny you should bring up the F-14 mode. Given the source movie, the looks of the jet mode are obviously very important. So it seems very probable to me that the robot mode design was dictated by trying to have as clean a jet mode as possible.
5. A lot of the markup is probably licenseflation, with the movie rights owners wanting their cut.

I thought Ectotron (who used a Voyager mold as his base) was $50 as well?

Looks cool.
This makes me wonder if Hasbro can use this mold for something else,or if is just a one off.

$40, at least from the original Pulse release and current restocking listing on entertainment earth.

I REALLY wanted to like this, but aside from the head sculpt, I'm getting a strong dollar-store vibe off of this. The plastic looks thin, the robot mode looks more hollow than usual, the weathering looks ugh...

I don't know, I was probably just expecting more.

Also, is it just me, or are the red and white on the helmet misaligned with each other? I hope they fix that for final.

Atrocious.

There is no way the current brand/design team made this...thing.

I can already feel how disappointing it will be in hand from that nearly translucent plastic, to the junky forearms, down to the 1980's engineering knee joint.

I'd ggpo this, but it wasn't a good game at all. This figure is Tom Cruise's personal politics if they were made from plastic and given the opportunity to sit on your shelf.

I am old enough to remember the start of the transforming toy craze, and this toys robot mold reminds me of the Not-Hasbro or Tonka toy lines of transforming robots that we're licensed by any old company looking to cash in. And I don't recall any of those toys using anything resembling high-end plastic. This thing's robot mode reminds me of a Macross Valkyrie license he use to have.

I'll probably still get it, but that reminder just screams "CHEAP" in my subconscious when I look at this.

Not for me. I was never much of a Top Gun fan and I can't even buy this just for being a nice figure. If I didn't know this figure was 7" tall I would swear it was a Deluxe. cheap looking plastic, scant amount of paint in bot mode, and no attempt to hide the forearm gaps. It looks like an upscaled deluxe from Revenge of the Fallen or Dark of the moon, though that might be an insult to a stellar figure like 2010's Terradive who has a more complex transformation and hides the gaps in his arms. Just an all around disappointing figure that I really wanted to like.

Immortal Starscream wrote:If this guy is a new mold, could he be retooled into somebody else? and if so, who?

Some are saying a Skystriker for the SDCC G.I.Joe crossover set, I'd like to see it used for Hooligan, but I wouldn't pay more than $40 for that.

He's a little bit ... meh.

Most likely will pass on him due to overpriced exclusiveness, plus the only good thing about the original Top Gun was the soundtrack.

Looks almost like it was designed by the people who designed the Star Wars and/or Marvel Crossover figures.

Back when the boxed picture fist leaked, I read a comment by someone who thought they used Classics Jetfire as the base figure. They should have. Either that or T30 Jetfire.

I'm thinking that in order to obtain a licence to make this they had to leave the jet mode as clean as possible. I believe the Star Wars figures had a similar limitation for their vehicle modes. Using either of the aforementioned Jetfire figures as a base wouldn't leave a clean undercarriage no matter how much you retooled or reshelled them.

If this had come out about 15 or so years ago then it would've been great. However by today's standards, it's not much to look at. It's not really a bad looking toy all things considered, it's just not amazing and has some glaring issues.

Jet mode looks sublime, but everything else... not so much. The shoulders look really awkward and that plastic is giving me strong FoC vibes (in all the wrong ways). Bot mode has a very cyberjet look to it.

I was thinking the exact same thing, robot mode looks pretty generic. Since the last 2 movie crossovers were retools of existing molds, what retool is this? I find it hard to believe Hasbro would create a whole new mold just for this.
