According to USAtoday, Hasbro is in talks to buy DreamWorks, the Studio behind animated movie franchises as Shrek and Madagascar. While NY Times is citing anonymous sources that talks are in "advance stages" and the deal would include a combination of stocks and cash. This deal with Hasbro would forge a family entertainment powerhouse to be called DreamWorks-Hasbro. Hasbro already owning 40% of Discovery Family is making it clear that they want to be the leader of family entertainment, using this media to promote their games and toys including Transformers.

According to Deadline.com, "DreamWorks Animation is deeply engaged in two potentially game changing negotiations that could transform the company — including one with Hasbro to forge a family entertainment powerhouse to be called DreamWorks-Hasbro. The other talks are with Hearst to turn DWA's AwesomenessTV into a joint venture."

DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg would become chairman of the combined operation, the website says.

I wouldn't quite refer the two talking about starting a joint venture together as "Hasbro wanting to buy Dreamworks".

You can call it a "merger" if you want, but make no mistake about it Hasbro is buying this company.

Yet, Katzenberg'll still be in charge? Does sound more like a merger to me, honestly.

Either way, wonder how folks'll think about this vs. the paranoia that sprung up from all the talks of deals made between Hasbro and Disney. :P

Oh great. You know who's going to end up paying for this? Their only profitable division, Wizards of the Coast. Which is going to cause the Hasbro execs to meddle even more with my MtG organized play, force the reprints of expensive cards to drive up sales, etc. Ugh.

Disney must bless Hasbro, DreamWorks deal

Per CNBC analyst Tom DiChristopher Disney could be a major obstacle standing in the way of Hasbro's purchase of DreamWorks Animation. In other words Disney must approve this deal! Hasbro has a very lucrative contract with Walt Disney to produce toys based on their Star Wars and Marvel Comics properties. Senior Analyst Steph Wissink at Piper Jaffray estimates that 25 to 30 percent of Hasbro's business is tied up with Disney. Hasbro owning Disney's biggest rival animation studio could present a huge problem.

After DreamWorks' recent box-office disappointments, including "Turbo" and "Rise of the Guardians." CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, also held talks with another potential buyer, Japanese telecommunications giant SoftBank.

My imagination is taking this a step forward. What if Hasbro buys Dreamworks becomes an opportunity to make Hasbro look more attractive to Disney, based on those crazy rumors from a couple of years ago?

Disney should just buy Hasbro.

Then they could have Emma's yellow VW bug on Once Upon A Time turn out to be G1 Bumblebee.

Nah, see, first Hasbro buy Dreamworks, then Disney buys Hasbro, then Disney buys back Saban, then Disney makes a deal with Bandai that forces them to join with Hasbro, then Disney buys Bandai and merges it with Hasbro, then Tomy gets merged with Disney's new Hasbrandai, then Warner Bros and Universal merge with each other, then Mattel and Lego merge together, and all three go at each other trying to eat the other two in a three-way free-for-all of Disney vs. Warnerversal vs. Mattego. 8-}

You forgot the part where Disney buys Florida from the U.S, (for me that's a dream come true).

so I take it you havent seen Star Wars Rebels?

My problem is that Disney is not trying to make anything new anymore. Yes, it's famous for breathing new life in old fairy tales but it was new life. Now, they have bought other peoples creativity and plan to milk it until we hate it. Star Wars used to be a group of special movies that were important. Now they are just a cash cow that will always been on the air or in the theaters in some way while there are still people to buy tickets. Yeah, they may be good movies, but its still a dillution.

I don't want them to own hasbro because its good for SOMETHING to not be owned by disney.

you know. I thought Turbo was disney. Silly me. But really. Disney takes Marvel and Star Wars from Hasbro. That's bad yeah. But really? Hasbro is pretty much the king of those kinds of toys right now. Dumb decision on Disney's part. Especially when dreamworks has NEVER been a threat to them.

We need a name for the Disney/Hasbro/DW merger that will inevitably happen.

The title made me think of Mickey Mouse in the Pope's garments sprinkling holy water on Hasbro and Dreamworks. "...in nomine Patris et fillii et Spiritus Sancti..."

Oh GOD no. Anything that increases Disney's ownership over everything (that isn't Japanese anyway, as Japan seems to be the only place where businesses will tell Disney to get stuffed) is a baaaaad idea.

Also, whoever it was that said Disney should buy Bandai...not gonna happen. 1, Bandai is Japanese, so they're out of Disney's reach anyway. 2, Bandai is so enormous that even Disney couldn't afford to acquire them. Mickey Mouse can't defeat Gundam I'm afraid. Or Kamen Rider. Or Godzilla. Or any of the other millions of franchises Bandai owns (and unlike Disney, they don't have a reputation as insufferable legal pricks). Bandai is going to live forever- I'll wager a lot longer than Disney.
