its not a casette player either, since there are no speakers. it's a microcasette tape recording device.
Those have speakers too if we're splitting hairs.

Soundwave is just a superior amalgamation.

Not all do, relying solely on headphones for sound output. Also, with the clip in the back he resembles a Walkman more (another one for you old lot). Originally, as Cassette Man, Soundwave did come with faux headphones and microphone, which were retained for his Japanese release.
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

Yup, but having or not having speakers is irrelevant as both cassette and micro-cassette players come with or without. That pic is of a full sized cassette player without speakers. Soundwave is traditionally a micro-cassette player and his cassettebot minions' alt modes are 1:1 with real micro-cassettes. Soundwave's G1 color scheme seems to be heavily influenced by that Sony Walkman full sized cassette player. Soundwave is an amalgamation of ideas, concepts and design queues.

I was just being an ass by farther splitting the hairs you split, but none of this matters much as Siege Soundwave and his minions are none of the above.

Basically Soundwave has never made much sense much like many of the early G1 toys that weren't realistic cars or jets and such and had to invent poor and illogical reasons to explain their alt-modes for the fiction of the time.

I kinda wish Springer had one of those switchable insignias like Jetfire does. Though if I really want to I could just stick a Decepticon symbol on his chest cos I have plenty from Toyhax anyways but it's not quite a simple and convenient as having it built in and easily changable back and forth. I know it's nowhere near as important as Jetfires, since Springer was never a true Decepticon and Jetfire was (for some reason) but eh I gotta Marvel UK...

So with regards to what's been revealed thus far...
>Prime: Possibly. One can never have too many Primes after all, and he does look very nice.
>Megatron: Maybe. Something about him seems off somehow. I still have my Dropshot-based custom to complete as well, so depending on how that turns out...we shall see.
>Combat Hero Megatron: Pass. Looks cool but not for me.
>Soundwave: Yes, definitely. He looks great.
>Shockwave: YES YES YES YES YES.
>Ultra Magnus: Most likely, he looks very good.
>Leader Prime: Maybe if I don't get the Voyager, he is very cool and more UT influence is always nice but something seems off about his proportions.
>Springer: Pass. Looks a cool toy but...I don't really care about Springer all that much.
>Starscream: Pass. Robot mode looks great but I don't care much for the vehicle mode.
>Thundercracker: See above.
>Hound: Yes. Looks awesome.
>All weaponizers: Multiples. They're so cooooooool.
>Reflector: Yes, all three.
>Sideswipe: Maybe, he looks pretty good.
>Red Alert: Pass, never cared all that much for him.
>Mirage: Pass, looks a bit awkward.
>Prowl: Maybe, I like him a fair bit but I'm not sure.
>Impactor: Pass, too small and too wonky looking.
>Flywheels: Maybe. He's OK.
>Jetfire: Yes, if I can justify him, he looks incredible.
>Omega Supreme: See above.
>Battlemasters: Case by case, they do look interesting though.
>Chromia: Pass, I do want Greenlight and Lancer though (and Firestar if I can find her).
>Ironhide: Yes, best Ironhide we've gotten in CHUG scale.
>Micromasters: Probably pass unless an absolute corker comes out.

Now we have that nonsense out of the way, my wishes for the future of the line:
>I really hope Astrotrain is good and has a nice train mode. I don't mind if he's just BIG or if he's a Voyager with extra bits that form a caboose or something.
>Grapple and Inferno!
>Some more UT characters- Demolishor and a Leader class Weaponizer Overload especially.

is that cybertron optimus prime supposed to be the g1 optimus reformatted yet again, or is it actually the cybertron counterpart from another dimension? just curious. I don't care for the figure at all but the Armada one not yet in colour actually looks alright. That design was a bit chunky but in a tough guy way, not in a fat way like cybertron and especially energon, and ditching the chest windows gave him a more unique look to other incarnations. Still looked like garbage in super mode but the regular form was fine and i got nice memories of playing the rather good Armada game on PS2. Hurtling down between the trees of the Amazon mountains in vehicle mode and turning into bot mode for battle was pretty fun.

so yeah i might buy Springer cos he's the only one I even remotely would want (for marvel reasons), shame Impactor looks so awful, dorky and undersized in comparison. And i might have considered Shockwave (also marvel) if there was a cheaper release without the backpack junk. That's why SS32 in Studio Series is quite useful for some people, cos it's the same voyager Optimus that's in the upcoming DotM Leader class set but if you don't want the trailer and all the stuff it does you at least have the cheaper option of buying SS32 instead. Still think Soundwave should have been the leader class set instead of Shockwave. A few of his cassette minions just seem a more logical choice as accessories than a goofy made up backpack.

Cobotron wrote:The only time that alt mode made absolute sense was in it's original Microchange environment. [-(

Well yeah that was my point. All those toys were repurposed and shoved into an all new narrative that had to try make sense of all those alt-modes and some clearly just never fit well at all.

Luckily, the realm of imagination need not make sense. 8-}

There's imagination and then there's just nonsensical bull****. I self censored cos yeah. :P Anyways dinnertime. :)

Does anyone know exactly how big Astrotrain is supposed to be in robot mode (at least according to the original Sunbow produced cartoon)? I've seen a lot of scale/size and style guides for G1 characters out there, but haven't found one that includes Astrotrain or Blitzwing along with their contemporary Decepticon comrades. I found a still of Astrotrain crowning Starscream from The Transformers: The Movie, so they look to be of about equal stature, but we all know G1 is never consistent with its scaling in the cartoon, so one scene isn't enough evidence to prove a case for whether Astrotrain should be a Voyager or Leader scaled figure.

Does it even make a difference with Siege? The two size classes are the same for the base bot.

I'll toss this out again. If Astrotrain comes to Siege as a leader he will have armor because Hasbro likes to stick with size class gimmicks. His nekked alt mode will be a train of sorts and then it will partially transform and armor up to become a larger shuttle. We'll get some parts forming mass shifting.

If that's true then this is an Astrotrain that should have been retooled into Sentinel Prime!

But there are no size class gimmicks in Siege. If armor was mandated then Hasbro would advertise the hell out of it every chance they had like the evolution gimmick of PotP Leaders or the Triplechanger gimmick of TR Voyagers.

As for Soundwave, he was a microcassette player even in Microchange as the line did have regular cassettes that turned into vehicles.

That’s a gimmick that just doesn’t work for Astrotrain IMO.

I’m happy to be prove wrong of course, it’s just my opinion. I’d like to see this “armored up” gimmick used for someone else, like...Thinderclash? Eh? Or Star Saber would be awesome, and that could be an easy way for HasTak to make him combine with Galaxy Prime!
Back at it again!
