These characters are fighting an endless war. Whatever their reasons for doing so, a LOT of them are going to develop a lot of sad memories and anguish, and that makes up a great deal of their character. It's called being alive.
That being said, there are some pieces in the mix that have some action, comedy and intrigue. The rest of the "being alive" deal.
