Is it okay to infer that with the exception of DonFig whose TF art were techincally transform capable, the SL UM version must have been THEN based on the upcoming Titanium UM?
I raise the question based on the almost similar TF sequence MP UM has to Titanium UM.
The Titanium 6 inch series were all designed by Don Fig.
But Spotlight UM wasn't based on Tits UM, the artist for that issue was/is a member on here and we had an interview with him once many moons ago. He then said he would answer any question we asked him in the interview's thread and so I asked him a few things like the size for Scorponok etc, I also asked whether or not there's a smaller robot inside UM or not, his answer was that he designed him to not have a smaller robot in him so that he transforoms directly from alt to the robot mode we all know and love from the toon.
So it's more a coincidence that two designs came out the same year that did something similar. The artist also wasn't big enough to get insider information from others that worked on the series, Spotlight UM was literally his first full TF comic he did, and it was before Hasbro took a large interest in the idw comics.
The only designs that were shared between toys and comics at the time was Classics Jetfire, because Don Fig was friends with the toy's designer and liked the design so much he used it for the comics, and Tits The Fallen sharing idw Megatron's design, because both were designed by Don Fig, who hated Pat Lee enough to not want any of his designs (like The Fallen) make it to plastic form.
Edit, sorry I found the interview, turns out that I did not ask about ultra Magnus having a smaller robot inside or not, that was part of the actual interview, sorry. Also, it seems like the interview was the victim of one of the board wipes we're plagued with far too often. It's missing the original thread and, its date claims it's older than my membership on this site, weird. Oh well, it is ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooold.
