SDCC and ACG had different paint apps on the legs, aside from just being chromed up ;)

*edit*
errr... wait. Am I getting confused with TT's Metro?

My only guess is they're holding off so's not to stifle the sales of SDCC Devastator.

Man, that would be a real dick move if it were the case.

You were just supposed to answer "Soon", Shaj. "Soon".

I feel like I won't end up with Devastator until September, which seems super far away even though it's less than 90 days.
Wonder how the paint application will be on the Takara. Not too thrilled with what I've seen from them so far on Masterpiece models. If the SDCC one is nicely done, no need to risk a Takara purchase unless it has some really significant differences to it. If SDCC isn't well done, probably Green Giant time for me.
Jay I feel like the Takara one is going to be the SDCC version with the Hasbro release head. Maybe an extra paint app (for the windows on Mixmaster or something). I'm sure it has been mentioned by people in the thread (I'm too lazy to search for it  ) kind of like Metroplex was very similar to the convention exclusives that year. They'll all be JUST enough to make them different, but I'm still going to stick with one of the Has/Tak versions over the third party offerings personally. Also, I think the big comparisons would be any of the Takara CHUG figures vs Hasbro CHUG as far as paint goes (not MP).

My dream Takara Tomy release would be the SDCC Devastator with the standard dark purple parts instead of vac metal, and purple Devastator fists. If we get a few remolded parts (elbows for Scrapper) that'd just be icing on the cake.

I thought it just had some extra paint apps/color molds but used the SDCC/ACG as the base?

Also note that the Hasbro 'Plex pictured has some stickers applied to it - this confirms my recollection that the SDCC/ACG Con Metroplex used the Hasbro version as a base.

This doesn't mean everyone's theorizing on Devastator is incorrect, just that you can't draw conclusions from the Metroplex release 2 years ago.

Ah, I guess if most of it is actually color-infused plastic and not painted plastic or painted metal, the poor quality of paint application we've seen on TT products won't be as much of an issue.

I agree with you Megatronus, I haven't run in to any paint issues with TT, jay. Usually the case is that the TT paint ends up being more accurate to the original item (either animation or toy model) I thought?

We have discussed this many times before.... It's incredibly unlikely since that would mean a lot of re-engineering and such, plus I believe Hasbro said they wanted to do a really faithful traditional Devastator in an interview, which is why they didn't have prowl in the first place.

Well, I'm thinking, since they made a Groove limb for Defensor, I think Takara may make a Prowl for Unite Warriors Devastator, If they DO a UW Devy. :-?

They won't for two reasons:

1) Prowl took Hook's place as Devastator's upper torso, with Hook becoming Devastator's right leg (replacing Scrapper). Thus, an accurate Prowlastator would require two new figures: Prowl as the upper torso, and a new Hook to form the right leg. In addition, building a Prowl who would be his usual black and white in robot and car mode and green in combined mode would tax even the most brilliant engineer at Takara.

2) No one in Japan cares about the IDW comics, so there is no reason for Takara to come out with Prowlastator.

As cool as it would be to have a (previously) comic accurate Devastator with Prowl as a component, it is ABSOLUTELY 100% NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

1) Prowl is green in both modes as a constructicon, so it wouldn't be as hard as you are making it out to be.

2) Making a new leg is not a big deal, (take Groove for example).

3) A lot people in Japan DO care about the comics, take this Megatron from a Takara set for example.ImageImage
While I know these are only repaints, why would they repaint Megs to be more comic accurate, if nobody cared about the comics? :???:

shajaki wrote:

Takara already teased a UW Devastator with sillhouttes, none of which look like Prowl.

I completely forgot about that teaser! :BANG_HEAD:

Maybe a third party company will do a new Prowl and Hook for Devastator? :???:

Yeah, brief aside to clarify this: the Japanese fanbase is enormous. Kotteri, Yamaishi, Hayato Sakamoto have worked or still are working with IDW. Andrew Griffith, Josh Perez and Livio Ramondelli are huge in Japan, as is Alex Milne.

The one big thing that gets in the way of the comics being widespread is that they've only just started translating and distributing them, starting with All Hail Megatron (as we saw here).

An extra example would be the CW Ultra Magnus figure. The Takara version is more comic book accurate in paint apps (and yet they have Alpha trion instead of minimus ambus so its give and take I guess)

Also of note between CW and Legends Ultra Magnus, the Takara version's blue and red are more G1 screen accurate, while the same colors match the IDW comic books much better on the Hasbro version, despite the Takara version including more paint apps and the red thighs to match the IDW version. In addition, Magnus now has white thighs in the IDW comic book too. If you wanna get down to it, the Hasbro version does a better job of emulating the comic book look for Magnus, minus the yellow paint apps on his knees and shoulder pylons, plus the inclusion of Minimus Ambus. Takara's just seems to be a mish-mash of inspirations, though the colors look gorgeous. It's hard to tell exactly what they were going for, honestly, because it doesn't quite get either the G1 cartoon look or the IDW look quite right.

Alpha Trion, really?

I would rather get the Hasbro version for a more G1 accurate color scheme.

But, to return to MrBlack's point - allowing for the recent developments in IDW circulation, AHM Devastator has no Prowl whatsoever, so the conclusion remains the same, as far as I can see. ;)

Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. I expect upgrades to make the existing bots more functional - at the point you're designing 2 whole figures and add-ons to work for an existing set, you might as well build a new Devy from the ground up. And two of those already exist.

I could be wrong, but that's just my gut.

Whipped up a comparison of the Hasbro retail versions versus the SDCC versions. Like I keep saying, the vac-metal purple is the least notable change. The SDCC versions are dramatically superior in the paint apps and decals department.

That comparison definitely solidified my decision to go with the SDCC version, and at only $30 more than the regular it's a no brainer. Now I just have to watch HTS like a hawk.

"Vac-metal parts" (short for "vacuum metalised parts") basically means it has chrome covering certain parts, like Transmetal figures from Beast Wars (hopefully not as flaky).

Thanks Va'al, I was waiting for those pictures. ^ ^

The chrome appears more like a metallic paint in effect.
At the moment, I think I will buy this version, waiting possible Takara version pictures.

You know, the more I think about it, I dont get why Mixmaster couldnt be the conventional cement truck he was in G1. Both ends could easily be interchanged if designed a little different.
