I thought of Transformers 2, and Lost. They've already got like 5 episodes of Lost in the can and they need about 11 more to do this coming season. And this is supposed to be a kick-butt season too.

Now all is... lost

If you want to know, it's quite obvious, and I can tell you. Actually, I did read some information on the second movie. I know pretty much of all that's gonna happen.

If you're talking about the leaked script treatment, it's been a confirmed "fake", in the sense that it was just a potential idea and was not approved. Nothing in the treatment should be considered official or legit in any way, shape or form.

Aww, well crap. I still think that he went back to Cybertron to gather followers of his own. Makes sense, anyway. :P

Ditto. I hope the writers are dedicated enough to think about the story while they're on strike. It would be better if they did.

Can I be bothered pretending to be shocked??

Nope.

Maybe we will gt a decent script written after the strike. If they had have tried to rush it through we would've gotten tripe.

i think the same can be said about movies and more so for the Transformers movie..and as script writer of stories myself...dont rush'em, cuz rushing things slams it right into crapsvile! so... lets try to look on the bright side

Man I knew this was going to happen. Effin greedy writers. Is 7 million bucks not enough for these people? I think its too much for some of the stuff they have churned out in recent years.

Its like they crap on 300 pages and call it a script.

I hope they dont get more. It just drives up prices at the movies. 10 bucks a movie now jeez......

And dont anyone give me this whole" we dont know how much they get paid" crap.

We do know. It was reportedly 7 milion for the transformers 2 writers.

And they just got paid $8500 for the plot summary for TF2, ie. the equivalent of maybe 2 paragraphs of type.

According to what I had heard on the news, this strike was not supposed to be a massive "every writer jump ship all at once" movement but more set up to go in waves, with the TV writers going first then working it's way up to the motion picture writers.
Apparently, if the news clip was wrong, this would mean that the nightly news writers were the first to bail on us..

I read yesterday where the news writers actually are supposed to be next to bail.

But hey, who watches network news anymore anyway? The blogosphere gives us everything we need

Emphasis on the word "reportedly" there, much like in the news blurb you linked the emphasis is on the word "expected".

In other words, it's not confirmed.

And let's see, how much did the first movie make? $800 million? The sequel may or may not reach that mark but hypothetically it does, their $5-$7 million equates to 0.625% - 0.875% of the gross. Doesn't seem much when you're penning one of the biggest movies of all time does it?

So someone PLEASE convince me why script writers shouldn't be holding out for more? ;;)

They're just as important as a director and the actors, and we all know how much some of THEM get paid.

Seconded. I would take a year of writer strikes if it meant that less drivel would end up on my TV and in my theaters. Doesn't mean that I'm not going to squirm while waiting for this particular movie, but oh, it would be so worth it.

However, I guess if writing was any better some people would never leave their living rooms.

On the other hand, most writers are probably just catering to the audience. And the audience seems to highly enjoy soap opera style drama, not funny humor and a lack of intelligence. Anything with a complicated plot, wit and dynamics seems to get canceled fairly quickly because it doesn't have mass appeal. Or it becomes a cult classic.

But that's off topic.

Why are people hoping more time = better script?

It'll just be delayed ... they don't get more time to write it, in fact they'll either end up having to rush it to meet the original deadline or it'll just be set back the number of weeks the strike runs.

I believe that the reported numbers for the TF2 script was for IF they could get a script done IN TIME for the strike.

Hollywood knew the strike was coming. So they said: Hey, IF we can get a script in BEFORE the strike, we can at least get to work on the visual effects DURING the strike.

As far as we know, NO script was written before the strike... so they won't be getting that 7 million (which would be split 3 ways anyways as there are 3 writers... so 2.3 million per writer, or less than 0.3 percent of the profit of the movie BEFORE DVD sales). And remember... this was just "rumor" as far as what they "might" have got paid for the sequel. They didn't make this amount for the first one, and as they didn't get the script done in time for the strike, they won't get that amount for this one.

Paying 7 million to ensure that you have a cool movie out when no other studio does is nothing, compared to the huge barrels of cash that would be made (no competition at box office... audiences hungry for entertainment... etc.).

Writers usually get crapped on. It's about time they took a stand against the Hollywood machine. They are also usually given very little creative control once a script is purchased (remember our TF scribe bemoaning what they did to his Catwoman script?) nor given much credit for the writing they do (how many of us know the names of the writers behind the movies and TV shows we love?).

Look at it this way... you'll have a year to enjoy downloading movies and TV shows from the BBC. And if you happen to be a budding youtube star... this could be the break you've been looking for ;-)

You have to realise that that is actually not alot of money, considering they are creating the foundation on which a multi-million dollar film will be built.

Look at it this way 8500$ is about the cost of a making a published book. You get a loan from a publisher and your book is printed and paid for. You created it, it's your story, your ideas. Everything is yours. Now the book is a worldwide best seller, but you never get any residuals, or any percentage of those sales. All you get is the initial money the publisher gave you to get it printed.

Yes, the writer's strike is inconvenient - that's the POINT! But they aren't being greedy in any way, they are some of the only truly creative people in Hollywood, they're just demanding the money that they deserve.
