The (un)official Auto Assembly 2010 thread (now with review & pics!)

Postby Pretender Skywarp » Sat Aug 14, 2010 12:49 am

As I post this I am on a train with my (extremely tolerant) wife, heading towards my first AA since 2006. I am only attending today, due to work and family commitments but hope to update this thread later with, photos and a review of the day.

Feel free to hijack this topic with your own views, pictures and toy hauls from what is looking to be Europes biggest ever Transformers convention....

Didn't get a huge amount of pictures as I only discovered whilst therr that I need a new bloody camera, more expense

Anyways, as mentioned I was only there for the Saturday and the convention is still in full swing as I type.

So, some pictures of my haul...

Image

Despartely trying to plug some gaps and managed to haggle a few bargains, Acid Storm was £5, Strak was £8 and Hound £12. The Meister is loose, but complete and was originally up at £35, I managed to nab him for £20 :D

Image

I didn't win the U-3pk, but there were plenty to be had! B'Ravage was MIB and only £15, happy days....

Image

Took this with me and Scott McNeil was gracious enough to sign it.

Image

I'd had this signed by David Kaye waaaay back at AA2006, it is finally complete with Garry Chalks' autograph.

Image

The first four postcards are all included in the pre-registration pack, as is the key-ring. AA managed to get an exclusive cover for TF ongoing #9 and the TFA-Bee postcard was purchased from Titan-UK Artist/Colourist Kat Nicholson, who signed it for my little girl.

Image

Derrick Wyatt was also in attendance and signed my DVD from the like titled TFA two pack.

I hope to post a mini-review of the days events a little later on :D

Thanks m8 :D

Was varying between £35 and £40. I got mine for £35 at the "Toyz & Gamez" table, dead on.

I thought that was pretty good value for 3 deluxes.

Edited for duff spelling!

And with those questions in mind, I present my mini-review and experiences at the Saturday of AA2010....

First some background. This was not my first AA, but I hadn't been in a while

The last one I attended was back in 2006, I had been to both the '04 & '05 one prior to that. '07 was a skip year for them and due to work commitments '08 & '09 didn't happen for me.

So onwards and upwards, having double-booked my eldest lad, who I originally intended to take, it was up to me and Mrs.Skywarp to make the trip. Mrs.Skywarp has quite a vested interest in the convention which can be summed as:

i) Making sure I don't spend too much money
ii)Making sure I do actually come home
iii) Making sure I behave myself
iv) Making sure I don't spend too much money

I live in Hertfordshire and am only 20 miles north of London. The AA oragnisers have chosen quite a good location in Birmingham, being pretty much in the middle of the UK, it's accessible to all. It has good Rail, Air and road links, so there were no issues transport wise. We chose to take the train (only had to change once) and were there in 2hrs. We got an express train back, halving that and Mrs.S having booked the
Train tickets in advance, it worked out costing us less than a tank of fuel (see points i & iv above).

The venue itself was a Hotel, less than 5mins walk from the Train station, thankfully the good old British weather hadn't quite come into play and we arrived nice and dry!

Whilst on the topic of the venue, it is also quite close to the Bullring shopping centre. This is especailly handy for people in my position. Mrs.S only has a passing interest in TF's, which usually extends to "How much of a geek are you being this time?" along with "How much is it going to cost?" (see points i & iv above). Once she was bored she could toddle off to the shopping centre and leave me to overdose on plastic crack. I did however notice the irony of her returning about two hours later with a new pair of shoes, muttering something about an "Impending Birthday". I did offer to get them signed for her but for reasons unknown she declined :???:

Doors opened at 1000hrs, with us arriving at about 1030hrs, enough time to have let the queue die down. We duly collected our pre-reg packs and I then headed to the fan sales table to try an offload a few items gathering dust in my collection.

Image
The opening foyer, the fan sales table on the left, in the middle a dealer table and another dealer to the right, entrances to the hall either side and the bar situated at the rear. Transformers and beer mmmmm...

Into the main hall revealed the dealer tables. Upon walking in the words "bees" and "honey" sprang immeditely to mind. Mrs.S had another analogy, whcih I won't use on a family friendly site. Fans were rummaging through boxes and looking through loose figures and the whole place was a real hive (bees see?) of activity. There was a good selection of toys form just about every era, no matter what the focus of your collection, there was something for you here. Given how TF starved us Brits usually are, no wonder it was so bloody busy!!

Image
The Xybertoys Stand.

Image
The 3Darths Stand (I think I caught them a little unaware!)

1100hrs saw the "Official" Opening Ceremony, with all the committe members taking the stage in turn and introducing themselves, followed by all the guests, who were all suitably applauded and everyone looked like they genuinley wanted to be there. I won't go through the rosta here, but given the fact that this is an independently run fan-convention, it was a pretty impressive list. The fact that some of them were returning, speaks volumes in my book... Garry Chalk got a huge cheer for commenting that being there "Was just Prime" :D

Image
The opening (and evidence that I need a better camera!)

Image
The main hall, stage on the right, registration desk on the left, main entrance to the left of that out of shot.

So once that was done it was back to hitting the dealer tables, chatting with fans or trying to meet the guests. All of the comic-related guests had bought stuff to sell, including original art, prints (for signing!) and were willing to take time to do sketches for a small fee. Nick Roche seemed to have a permanent queue and the other were always doing something for somebody. Simon Furman had even bought along a box of trades (both DW & IDW) that he was selling for £5 a piece. I forgot to mention it in my haul, but I snagged the IDW BW-Omnibus, signed by Mr.Furman for a fiver, get in!!

Image
The comic guests lined at the rear, with their backs to the dealer area. Yes that is someone cosplaying as Carly speaking to Simon Furman...

When the stage wasn't in use, the screen was being used for TF-episodes, a good cross section, I spotted both both BW and TF-A, presumably as they were relevant to the guests in attendance. I ducked out for a spot of lunch and missed the first part of the comic panel, but I have to admit my reading of TF comics in general is spoaradic and waaaay out of any order at best, so (personally) I didn't feel I was missing too much. There were a couple of very good moments with Nick Roche coughing to the fact that his Mum used to read him TF Comics as a bed time story and that they were the ones written by Furman, just to make the poor guy fel really old...! There was plenty of fan interaction, given that this was an "unofficial" event the atmosphere was very relaxed compared to the potential "I really can't comment on that" type answers that you see at some of the bigger events.

The fans are what makes it and upon Saturdays attendance figures, they made it the biggest TF Convention in Europe. EVER. 572 attendees, I'm assuming that can rise with "on the door" admittance on Sunday, but we'll have to wait and see. Everyone was in good spirits, polite and willing to chat. Lets face it, we are all there for the same thing right(with the possible exception of Mrs.S, but you'll need to see point i & iv above)? Some had really made the effort and turned out in costume, there was an AMAZING classic Grimlock, but I didn't get to nab a photo of her, she's bound to be on the web somewhere so I'll try to find it for a later post.

Image
Cosplay me up...

Other thing present involved one of the most amazing, jaw dropping displays of Japanese era G1 I have ever seen. TF@The Moon were back and were looking to top their display of lucky draw figures from last year. Needless to say, I think thay did it, but a picture paints a thousand words....

Image
Points i & iv well and truly out the window...

Image
No GPS on that bad boy!

Image
Fortress Maximi?

Image
Bet that Metrotitan's not a KO...

After I'd finished drooling and been dragged away by Mrs.S stating words to the effect of "Not in your lifetime". I was time for the Charity Auction hosted by...

Scott McNeil!! Only having recently introduced myself to BW, the guy is amazing. He has a fantastic repertoire and slipped in an out of characters during the auction and the convention as a whole. Some of the items went for some amazing money (a 1984 Movie DVD, signed by Leonard Nimoy for nearly £200  ), but it was all for a good cause. McNeils line was always busy and deservedly so, he was amiable and willing to stop and chat, pose for photo's and sign away till he couldn't sign anymore and hilarious to boot!

Image
The man. The legend. Scott McNeil is there too!!

Post Auction and a few big screen episodes later came Garry Chalk. Chalk was supposedly feeling a liitle "under the weather", but that didn't stop from sitting at his spot, signing and posing for pictures. He was engaing with both young and old alike. You've got to remember that he IS Prime to an awful lot of people having voiced him more tha ANY other actor. He seemed genuinely humbled after autographing a toy for me when I simply thanked him for his time, i guess some fans expect his time. Up on satge he was the true professional, answering questions about a whole host of voice-acting issues, not just TF related. He expressed his frustration at the ADR process of the Unicron Trilogy and it was obvious that he far prefers "acting" to "dubbing".

Once he was done, so was the day and subsequently the event for me, The main hall was closed and prep was made for the Saturday evening "social". Would I have changed anything if I was doing it?
Maybe. The dealer area was a little to cramped, the back row of chairs could have possibly been forsaken to allow the extra isle space. I might have moved the registration desk to the entrance hall to put the dealers all in one place. I'm assuming it was where it was to allow the "staff" to be near the stage when need be.
But I wasn't organising it and these little niggles of mine shouldn't detract from what was a well put togther, enjoyable, fun day out and that's just for Saturday. Hopefully somebody with a weekend pass can expand on this for me.

You never know, maybe next year I'll go for the whole weekend, but that will be very much dependent on points i & iv above..... ;)

Thanks man. Like I said the dealer area was very cramped, everyone wanted to be there as lets face it, what are you going for at a TF convention.

There are a couple of bits I missed out such as the gaming area and the kids activities, only beacuse I didn't have my six year old with me. The fact that they have even accomodated the kids is a big plus.

Yes some of the cosplay was a bit naff, but everyone looked like they were having fun. I can't stress enough how good that Grimlock was..I wish I had a picure!

There is a whole host of stuff I missed out on today, hopefully another board member can fill us both in!!

Glad you liked the Toy Display. We really weren't sure how it would go down, as we've had most of those bits for 7 to 13 years.

Sunday saw slower, due to people drinking lots on Saturday - though as a Commity member, boy we were run off our feet.

Derrick's panel was enjoyable, though I thought there would be more questions. Jim and Bill's panel and preview of "never seen before, and only published once" bits went down really well.

Scotts panel, as you would guess, had everyone excited and in stitches - though I'm sure you're get a better description of that day .. I'm still knackered

Moonbug,

My pics really don't do that display, or the event in general, justice. I do like the way that you happen to have MIB Japanese era G1 just lying around tho'!

I can only imagine how much effort went into the weekend and I'm gutted I couldn't do the whole thing. I hope my review was to your liking and the my (personal) niggles don't come across as too negative.

I'll have to head over to the Moonbase and maybe buy you guys a beer next year?

Removing the back row of chairs .. I suggested that on Friday morning.
Dealer space at the back - I agree again, we actually made it larger on Friday night, believe it or not. The hall isn't really big enough, for the layout and number of people. I'll pass those thoughts on though, as you weren't alone with that.

Sat evening - two tables were reserved for guest (as 12 had 13 of them and 10 chairs per table), but as they say in the "crowd" we eventually moved them off. Personally I don't know why the tables were there. There were less then last year, but I think we'd be better with just rows of chairs and no tables.

It was purely that dealer "corridor", mostly where Kapow and Toyz & Gamez (I think?) were opposite each other. The back row of chairs could *maybe* have gone to then shunt the guest tables fowards, and then the dealers, just to open up the flow a little more.

However in the greater scheme of things it is fairly minor, there not being much space didn't mean I spent any less money!! My hat is off to all concerned and I will make every effort to be back next year :APPLAUSE:

What would you say was the best part of the convention, other than picking up some toys?

Auto Assembly 2010 memories

Postby Dead Metal » Tue Aug 17, 2010 10:37 am

Motto: "Don't do drugs, beer's cheaper anyway!"
So Auto Assembly 2010 has come to a close on Sunday and we're starting to realize that it is indeed another year until something this awesome hits the UK. Seibertron.com member Dead Metal was just one seibertronian to attend the convention and while the convention didn't contain anything new Transformers news wise it was still great. Among the guests where:

Garry Chalk (voice actor of Beast Wars Optimus Primal and Optimus Prime in the Unicon Trilogy)
Scott McNeil (voice actor of Beast Wars Wazpinator, Silverbolt, Dinobot, Rattrap and Jetfire in the Unicon Trilogy)
Derrik J Wyatt (Designer for Transformers Animated)
Jim Sorenson (AllSpark Almanak)
Bill Forster (AllSpark Almanak)
Nick Roche (Last Stand of the Wreakers)
James "Sexy Man Beast" Roberts (Last Stand of the Wreakers)
Liam Shalloo (Transformers Animated: The Arrival)
Simon "Who may I kill" Furman (Transformers "-ation" series)
Simon "Hollywood" Williams (UK Transformers comic book)
Kris Carter (colourist UK Transformers comic)
Jason Cardy (UK Transformers comic)
Kat Nicholson (UK Transformers comic colourist)

The guests where amazing as was the event you can find two videos and a few photos in this article if you wish to see more or even share your experience of Auto Assembly then do so by clicking here.

I think I saw you at one point, thing is that pic you posted of Carly (who is in fact a girl and not a guy, just to clarify) I'm sitting on one of the chairs on the left side of the room, but due to the angle I am hidden behind Denim (the dude with the Cowboy hat talking with Jim Sorenson and Bill Forster), oh well next time we'll talk. ;)

And yes that chick was both Wheeljack and Grimlock, She even ran around with Grimlock's dino head under her arm on Sunday, by the way she's US military and came all the way from South Korea just to make me feel ashamed that I only had to come from Germany....

And now some of the photos I took, excluding the crappy ones ruined by the fact that there was no lighting on the stage and those that I haven't uploaded yet. They are all click-able thumbnails!

AA 2010 was my first ever TF convention. Been meaning to go for years. Had an absolute blast.

Picked up Botcon Tap Out and Chromia, Collectors Club Ramjet (Armada Skywarp repaint) among others as well as getting the missing issues of the Wreckers comics.

Spoke to Nick Roche. Very nice fellow. Seems some of my friends were telling the truth when they said they knew him. He even remembered seeing my oversized custom Micromaster Devestator from Build King when one of my friends was customising it for me.

So glad I finally went and if I'm not crippled with a mortgage will definitely go back next year.

I wish I could have attended this year but it would have cost alot of cash and I wouldn't have been able to stay long. I am working in South Korea and it is about £1000 for a round trip ticket. I would also have to have left Saturday evening. Oh well, there is always next year.

It's the first time I attempted doing something like that (especially something I've put my face to!) and whilst I don't think I'll be giving up my day job any time soon, I did enjoy writing it and may consider doing more.

No need tpull your punches either, I'm a big brave boy...

awesome review, and i really enjoyed it, was alot more than i expected when i asked you to give you thorts and feelings on the event.

The contents great, informative, has a very personal conversation type tone to it making it easy to read and also a pleasure at the same time.

structure was gud as the use of images to break up text has been used well, and helps keep interest especially when large articles on the interwebz are very hard to focus on and read

like you sed a few typos, but i really liked it

hope this helps

hope to see you at next years AA if i can make it =D
