UW08-Bruticus
UW09-Sky Reign
UW10-(???) perhaps a new Decepticon combiner which makes use of the Grand Scourge Torso
UW11-Computron
UW12-Another new Decepticon Combiner made of various repaints?

Of course they could just release Computron and Bruticus as UW 07 & 08, and avoid the others. But the Convoy & Galvatron combiners show they are willing to use Torsos of new characters, even if they aren't original G1.

I like the thought of two new decepticon combiners and I can honestly see everything you mentioned happening, with the exception of grand scourge since he is unite warriors version of combiner wars cyclonus meaning he can use any limbs.

I agreed on Grand Scourge. He's just a one off torso from eHobby. He'll get no mass retail release or team of limbs. If you want a team for him that matches his only fictional appearance (not counting the Energon/Superlink comic), then you can get an extra set of Stunticons.

Do you think Takara will also do their own version of Sky Reign too, or do you think they'll just go "one and done" with a Liokaiser redeco/retool?

So far, I've had all of the Hasbro Combiner Wars versions of the combiners along with Unite Warriors Superion and Menasor. A lot of people seem to be swearing off the Unite Warriors versions based on a perception blandness from a lack of extra paint apps due to being more "cartoon accurate." It's simply not true. CW and UW Superion are pretty equivocal with the only distinctions being color choices for some plastics (combiner hands/feet, Silverbolt, etc.) and the layout of the decos (UW is more cartoon accurate; CW more toy accurate). UW Menasor looks fantastic. While lacking some of the toy details that Hasbro included, like Dead End's stripe or the copious extra maroon on Dragstrip, the paint jobs are far from bland. Yes, Dragstrip is mostly yellow, like in the cartoon, but he is cast and painted in two different shades of yellow. When you have him in hand, you see it. It works very well. The details in robot mode for most of the Stunticons aren't lacking either, just sort of "remixed" to match that cartoon better. I know a LOT of people are especially bummed by Defensor, especially with the painted detail on torso mode Hot Spot being left bare in United Warriors, but the shade of blue he is cast in is so much better. Hasbro's Hot Spot looks anemic by comparison. Don't be fooled by the pictures online, these toys look great in hand in normal lighting conditions and without "Photoshop touch-ups". Even if certain details aren't painted, the molding on these figures is good enough that when viewed in person with normal light and shadowing, the details still effectively "pop". Think twice before swearing off the Unite Warriors versions and ask yourself if your armchair opinions aren't at least a little bit influenced by monetary concerns and/or cognitive dissonance.

I've been on the fence with this for the whole time, wanting to commit to one or the other. So basically there is no "win-win". With CW you get a toy that aesthetically looks better, with UW you get a toy of better quality. Would that be an accurate statement?

Unite warriors and combiner wars ( with Devy being an exception) are of the same quality, they just sport different decos.

Unite Warriors Devastator is the best version, hands down. Each robot is more articulated, and has his own classic G1 styled gun. Devastator himself has a modifiable head sculpt that can pull of either his individual eyes look or the visor look from the cartoon. The paint isn't lacking compared to the retail Hasbro release. Again, it's more of a "remix" for screen accuracy, especially in combined mode. If you like more "bling," you have the SDCC version, with all the same missing features of the regular Hasbro release but with a different head sculpt.

Superion I think is the most equivocal, as I said earlier. You can't really go wrong if you can get Hasbro's limited release "Quickslinger" release or spring for the Takara set.

The biggest draw of United Warriors Menasor is a correctly colored Motormaster. The Hasbro versions mostly gray color scheme is neither G1 screen nor G1 toy accurate. As a bonus, with Takara, you're guaranteed to get the version of the Motormaster mold with the fixed hip ratchets for the best stability for Menasor in combined mode.

Similarly, Unite Warriors Defensor is the only way (as of this time) to get a truly "Classic G1" team with Groove as a full-sized limb instead of an accessory with the Combiner Wars version.

Eventually. :P Maybe January or February. My point was that the only UW set I'm intrested in is Devastator, and that's because he's an IMPROVEMENT from CW Devastator, but the other UW sets are either just recolors or recolors with a new limb mold.

And there's no guarantee that TT will release Victorion in UW as is without using a fictional shoehorn. Also they're all female characters so they'll be... "adapted" to fit the culture more (they turned Windblade into a geisha-like maid!), plus the Groove mold would be omitted.

Given the timeline of teasers Bruticus will be next after Grand Galvatron, once they're ready to reveal new-mold Blast Off, or Sky Reign with the whole "odds are Cybertrons, evens are Destrons". After that, who knows?
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

- Greenlight, Lancer and PotP Elita-1 (plus repro Victorion hands and feet?)

It only makes sense. Superion was released at that time last year so being consistent with the schedule, it would come out at that very same time since Bruticus is appearing at us retail at the same time Superion was last year. Pretty much if the pattern for releases s the same, then UW Bruticus will be coming out in June.

Wolfman Jake wrote: The paint isn't lacking compared to the retail Hasbro release. Again, it's more of a "remix" for screen accuracy, especially in combined mode.

I would argue that there are better paint apps on Takara's since while the individual robot modes are remixed as you put it, Takara has added more paint in the other modes. Firstly, it has a whole bunch more paint on Mixmaster's alt mode, making him face any direction and giving him that G1 edge for root mode, Bonecrisher has paint on his tracks (making up for the lack of silver on his robot mode), all the rims are painted a beautiful silver which makes a HUGE difference (you these are construction vehicles so the rims are pretty big), the missile pods have the individual missiles painted red, and the arms have silver on them. Add that to the purple hands and there is a way better mix of colours found on Takara's combined Devastator than Hasbro's. Also, it doesnt have Hasbro's stupid mistake of having the decepticon symbol upside down on the knee. And of course, this is just discussing the deco as an aside from all the bonuses. Also, speaking of deco, the green is better. It is more green than Hasbro's more yellowish tint.

o.supreme wrote:I've been on the fence with this for the whole time, wanting to commit to one or the other. So basically there is no "win-win". With CW you get a toy that aesthetically looks better, with UW you get a toy of better quality. Would that be an accurate statement?

No way, Takara has Hasbro beaten pretty hard on all the UW releases I have. I have Devastator, which I described in depth above. But if you are curious here is the rundown on why UW Superion is faaaaaaaar superior than Hasbro's in deco (the plastic quality is the same, so the deco and members is the real big difference here).

While the deco is better, (just look at Silverbolt's shoulders for instance) the big part of the deco that gets me giddy is the superion chest. Let me explain.

The character model has Silverbolt's chest transform into Superion's chest and they are very different color wise. Silverbolt's chest in the G1 cartoon is red but seperated by white while Superion is red all across (except for a small patch).

Due to the engineering of back then, the G1 toy could not do that so the chest was a full red for both Superion and Silverbolt since it didnt really transform.

However, the new updated Combiner Wars toys have the engineering so that whatever chest Silverbolt has, Superion doesnt necessarily have to share it. And indeed, the transformation into a torso is quite involved and the same chest peices are not reused. And yet, Hasbro's lazy paint job doesnt showcase that at all since you still end up with a full red chest for both Silverbolt and Superion.

However, Takara does make the most of this great tnrasformation by showcasing how the torso has morphed and is far from just being Silverbolt's chest. And for once, the color change on the chest is very visible. This may look small, but it is a big deal for me since it highlights the evolution in engineering of these wonderful toys.

Image

Now add to that the fact that Takara adds paint to extend the wingspan of the wings for the jets. Check out how beautiful they come out compared to Hasbro's.

Look at the wing on Takara below:

Image

Now look where the pain on the wing ends with Hasbro's

Image
Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Firefly Gallery

You see what I am talking about o.supreme? It is all WIN if you stick with UW. At least for Devastator and Superion.

Yeah I think it will be one and done. Wouldnt be the first time. Rook, Alpha Bravo, Off Road and possibly jet slingshot will never be released there either.

I am pretty sure they will use some of those new Victorion heads for their individual members too (probably for some of Liokaiser's components) though I dont think they will outright release victorion.

The only reason I like cw Superion is that TT's has too much 'samey' bright white, I actually really like cw silverbolt's cream color.

(also why should I care about painted wingspan when said wings remain folded in perpetual combined mode) ;)
I am not a G1 fan, please treat my opinions as such.

Wolfman Jake mentioned something about the actual reality colors of defensors. I say yes yes and YES. Right onna money!

Omission of details on his thighs notwithstanding but the color of the plastics used is glossy type that makes the details stand out (kind of a gain and lose as well but to replace the silver apps on Defensor's neck, TT had to cost cut somewhere :-( ) which can't be dicerned using them high end pixel digicams. You must see it to believe it.

Also, in echoing Silly Springer, aside from the already a given Bruticus coming six or seven months from now, I'd probably be getting Galvatronus. The Optimus Maximus (especially Optimus' head really a turn off (heck, I'll be displaying him in Combiner mode anyway) but the Tommy Kennedy style PM Optimus head is just too freaky for my taste)mold just doesn't light my fire.Especially with the stability issues (UW-02 of mine is either slouching forward or backward).

Do you think Takara will also do their own version of Sky Reign too, or do you think they'll just go "one and done" with a Liokaiser redeco/retool?

Yeah I think it will be one and done. Wouldnt be the first time. Rook, Alpha Bravo, Off Road and possibly jet slingshot will never be released there either.

I am pretty sure they will use some of those new Victorion heads for their individual members too (probably for some of Liokaiser's components) though I dont think they will outright release victorion.

Did you mean jet Blast Off?

For a possible Liokaiser, I can both see some very wonderful and obvious ways it would work well, especially if Takara does bless us with a proper Technobots team, but I also see some pretty significant hurdles, such as Leozack's robot mode or how to integrate Jallguar effectively. Leozack will look really odd as a non-humanoid robot. The amount of retooling to get him right would leave very little of value in the Sky Lynx mold as is, especially since the space shuttle is already a huge compromise over a proper fighter jet. Jallguar could easily be the "sixth man" a la the Combiner Wars teams, acting as a gun or armor piece, but he might require a brand new mold that can interact with the Sky Reign chest convincingly. Now we're talking two brand new molds from Takara to make this work. Takara might be willing to do that, but they've already done quite a lot making their own deluxe scale Groove and (presumably) a proper space shuttle Blast Off.
