Classics Inferno, unconventional? Yes, well, my choice is anyway.
This figure is the..., now this is a science term here: bomb-diggity. Classics is all about capturing the essence of G1 in new improved packaging with fancy new flavors. Inferno does it best, period. He's big, blocky, and brutal. Old School check in? Present. He's detailed, intricate, and articulated. New School, you around? Hell yes.
Also? He's a pump truck, not a ladder truck, so take all your stupid 3rd party ladders somewhere else. The little update to his alt mode, done in a tasteful way considering his size is also a nice bonus.
Above all, I love the transformation. Everything locks, clicks, panels, and generally gets the F out of the way making for an incredible piece of TF engineering.
FAVOURITE REPAINT OF 2009
Henkei Smokescreen, is the paragon of "You're doing it right Takara/Tomy". In my mind, this (along with Hound) is one of the shining examples of "WTF, how could things have gone so wrong for us?" that makes me thank our Japanese overlords for correcting an injustice to my fav G1 car guy.
Not only does Henkei Smokescreen make a beautifully painted representation of the coolest Prowl-y mold variation, but he is easily and vastly superior to the US release. The detailing is superb, the color choices are perfect, and the total package is something that should not be missed if you care at all about your Classics toys.
FAVOURITE REMOLD OF 2009
Henkei Hot Shot
In the land of blind men, the man with one eye (or two guns in this instance) is King.
FAVOURITE EXCLUSIVE OF 2009
Ghost Starscream
God Damn, this is a nice toy...
Hey, my list is filling up with Japanese toys. I think I'm an elitist douchebag. Also, Henkei Inferno is better than Universe Inferno.
How about that Ghost Starscream? Yea? What do you want me to say? He's perfect. Buy one. Is he $80+? Yes. You can't afford that?
Donate blood, plasma, or sperm.
Whatever.
FAVOURITE BOTCON EXCLUSIVE OF 2009
Leozack
Heeeeey...an American exclusive toy based off a Japanese character. Otaku? Me? No, I mean, I'm down with Hentai (No, I did not mean Henkei.), but that's about as far as it goes.
Leozack is the bee's knees, perfect color balance, wonderful use of clear plastic, great mold, just a great package all around.
I hope yours came with both is feet. I mean, mine did; some people's did not though. That's China's fault though.
FAVOURITE REVENGE OF THE FALLEN FIGURE OF 2009
Long Haul
I considered choosing Supreme Devastator because, well, it would be funny. Long Haul deserves to have his praises sung though. Essentially, he's the Universe Inferno of the RotF line. He does it all, does it well, and without fail. Bulky, posable, detailed, perfect.
This is what a Transformer should be. This height of quality should be what all the other movie toys reach towards. I am concerned that we did not show this toy enough love and praise this year. I blame you.
FAVOURITE ANIMATED FIGURE OF 2009
Blurr
Wonderful, if not a bit tight in the design department. This toy played a large part in convincing me to give Animated a fair shake. His shape defines his purpose and is at the same time a reflection of it. He mirrors the G1 toy well with his shield and head-fin. Even if I hated Animated (which I don't anymore), I would own this toy. That's high praise from an elitist prick like me.
FAVOURITE TRANSFORMERS MOMENT OF 2009
Opening my G3 trailer.
I can't explain how much fun it was to open this thing and just run through the features while my wife sat watching just engrossed at all the little gimmicks. I got to play with a toy in a manner which I don't often get to just to try out all the crap this thing can do. Opening up this toy led to a complete re-envisioning of my Classics Autobots display.
Good times.
