SDCC 2017: IDW Publishing and Hasbro Present First Strike, with Transformers, Rom, GI Joe

Postby Va'al » Thu Jul 20, 2017 3:51 pm

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
Sitting on the IDW Panel via magicks of technology, we have your coverage of the topics discussed, with everything leading up to the big event taking place shortly across the Hasbro Universe: First Strike! Several teases and confirmations have happened, among a lot of behind the scenes talk that we had mostly already covered through interviews, previews, and solicitations -- but keep reading to find out more, BIG news for IDW Publishing's Hasbro Universe in the coming months...

The Transformers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, Rom, and the Micronauts—some of your favorite childhood toys—now all inhabit one shared universe! Learn how the creators behind the books work together to create a new world filled with giant robots, magical menaces, and lots and lots of laser guns! This panel will also feature a special sneak preview of the Hasbro comic book event—FIRST STRIKE! Join panel guests Mairghread Scott (Transformers: Till All Are One), John Barber (Optimus Prime), Aubrey Sitterson (G.I. JOE), Chris Ryall (Rom), David A. Rodriguez (First Strike), and Brandon Easton (M.A.S.K.) for an in-depth look at the Hasbro line of comic books!

Image

John Barber: Why does Optimus Prime deserve a book now?

JB: Leader, a Prime, he hasn't been a leader of Cybertron for a while. Revolution is sparked by forced annexation of Earth to Council of Worlds. Not everybody agrees with what he's doing, and there's a wide cast. Several important members, such as Soundwave and Pyra Magna, but it all revolves around the changes brought by Optimus.

Mairghread Scott: What is happening now in Till All Are One?

MS: Starscream supreme leader of Cybertron, dabbling in politics, mind control, manipulation - and getting as close to a happy ending as has ever happened.

Carlos Guzman: What is Lost Light and why is Rodimus purple?

CG: Continuing story of More Than Meets the Eye, with James Roberts and Jack Lawrence, we're heading back to Getaway and the Lost Light pretty soon (LL #10).

Rom: we're getting to find out more about the Solstar Order and the Dire Wraiths as the story continues.

Micronauts were at the heart of Revolution, and now continuing with Wrath of Karza - why are they such important characters?

Brandon Easton on MASK: looking at the series as lynchpin for First Strike, despite the 'Crown Jewel' status of GI Joe.

Aubrey Sitterson: What makes GI Joe The Crown Jewel of the Hasbro Universe? The energy and force they have brought to the title, to the team, to the IDWverse - Giannis Milogiannis and Lovern have created a whole new aesthetic for big action comics.

The idea of First Strike is one of a jumping-on point for readers, with titles not only crossing over, but making it into an actual event, with lasting consequences. Mairghread Scott discusses the intricacies and complexities of managing what wanting to write versus what the Hasbro Universe might want - "You know what would be cool? Let's put G.I. Joe on Cybertron. Let's get weird." - and the editorial weight of that balance of the likes of David (both the co-writer and the editor, one assumes). She reassures on the organic way in which the stories are being allowed to merge, however (despite the rushed nature of Revolution, ndr) - "We wanted a hard emotional center to all the crazy ninjas."

Rodriguez also praises the help and knowledge of John Barber, from the previous experience as editor for a lot of the Transformers books, and just his knowledge overall of the GI Joe and TF lore and stories.

All writers are asked about the perspective of the various tie-ins within the core story, featuring Micronauts and Rom, MASK and GI Joe, with Transformers still at the centre. With the end of the event, new books will be set off, as we covered back here:

But those characters, naturally, aren’t going away for good — September sees a G.I. Joe: First Strike by Aubrey Sitterson and Ilias Kyriazis and a Micronauts: First Strike one-shot by Christos Gage and Chris Panda; October follows with a M.A.S.K.: First Strike one-shot from Sitterson and Kyriazis and Rom: First Strike from Christos Gage and Chris Panda. Additionally, a Optimus Prime: First Strike one-shot is scheduled for September from John Barber and Guido Guidi; Barber is joined by artist Guido Guidi in October for the Transformers: First Strike one-shot.

Then in November, a new series titled G.I. Joe: Unmasked (uniting G.I. Joe and M.A.S.K.) is set to debut in the wake of First Strike, and Rom & The Micronauts is slated for December.

According to Sitterson: "G.I. Joe: Unmasked is going to get very weird, very quickly. Army ants. Dinosaurs."

The Visionaries series has been confirmed to come out of the event, too, as first speculated back here.

And the big tease that will have ScottyP phasing through walls from the high-frequency vibration: UNICRON IS COMING.

If James Roberts is writing the story unicorn is in, he'll probably end up being gay for primus, and the reason they're fighting is primus doesn't love him anymore.

That sounds awesome. Primes and Battle Unicorn shipping can be a thing, that's cool!

Regardless, I hope Roberts is majorly involved with whatever Unicron story they come up with because of the influence Marvel UK has on him. "Legacy of Unicron" is one of the best Unicron stories ever told and I'd love to see him try to top it, I think he could succeed:)

So I'm seeing it reported elsewhere that there will be a Till All Are One Annual in December and a Transformers Annual in January that is Thundercracker's screenplay about Starscream. Any confirmation here?

I hope the answer is none/zero/nought/zilch and they feel the need to create NEW characters.

Racebending should never be the answer DC & Mattel learnt from this PC SJW nonsense. (Wally/Wallace West & ZodaC & ZokaK)

I said in one of my youtube videos that there is still room for both Matt Trakkers.

So anyway, if we could maybe get back on topic instead of whining about harmless possibilities that weren't being discussed, that'd be kind of nice.

Thought it was on topic. Visionaries was mentioned as an upcoming IDW comic and I was curious about any potential redesigns of the characters.

Oh, very much so - we'll probably be seeing material show up in the next month or so, once the first couple of issues of First Strike are out and the series is actually announced via IDW rather than a panel.

I don't care if Clutch gets reintroduced to M.A.S.K. as a meth addicted 55 year old Vietnamese woman, or if Hondo Maclean is introduced as a milquetoast angsty suburban gender fluid furry. If it means they have a tool with which to tell a compelling story and they happen to get to appeal to and be relatable for a larger percentage of potential readers looking for fictional representation they can identify with in a positive way that encourages and celebrates our potential to be different in cool, non-harmful ways, then any of these authors can do whatever they please. Are the Reagan '80s trope characters from the MASK cartoon really all that great to the point they shouldn't be messed with? Nope. Does doing new things with a new version of a character lessen the version from 30 years ago that is still loved by some? No. It's ok to change things.

But really, the fact them making a Matt Trakker toy brought this whole really tired old debate back after that comic has been out for 9 months should tell IDW everything they need to know: Even if Matt Trakker was white in this version, y'all wouldn't have been reading the book anyway.

That's all I have to say about that. >:oP

Frequencies so high pitched that the cops thought they had to bust up an impromptu One Direction jam fest at my house. (Are they even still a thing? My days of knowing what the kids are into has long passed)

I was reading at first cos curious how a modern MASK might work but trying to cram it into Transformers and GI Joe just didn't work for me at all and it just felt it lost it's own unique feel the original MASK toyline and cartoon tried to carve out for itself despite the obvious influences of both those other franchises on it in the 80s. I quit a couple issues in. And yeah I didn't really care for the new Trakker's characterisation. Couldn't relate to it at all or like him much. I'd hoped for a return of Visionaries for years but if IDW is in control of it all I'm not sure I'll bother. I've not been massively happy with a lot of their stuff including several attempts I've tried to get into their Transformers line. I sorta enjoy their Ghostbusters stuff but I do wish the artist would stop drawing the 'live action' Ghostbusters far more characutured and cartoony than the cartoony Real Ghostbusters. It's really jarring especially when the two versions crossover.

Given what you've said and you do make some good points.
This issue is very much alive within the comic industry and isn't going away.
I'd also argue that you have little regard for the established history and characterizations of the aforementioned character's or any others.

But anyway **** happens and I've done what I can and chosen not to support it with my wallet like I have most of marvel at the moment.

Not sure how I feel about Unicron. Usually I don't like him and Primus as a concept and I've been enjoying IDW's multiple-religions-none-outright-confirmed thing they've had going on so far. That said, IDW themselves have made me much more lenient towards concepts after they made Megatron being an Autobot not only excellent but arguably the best thing in the entire franchise. So I'm much more open to concepts I'd usually be iffy on, especially with IDW.

... and really, I should've known this was coming anyway. There's been no hints at it but it's obvious that Hasbro is gonna bring out a Titan Unicron somewhere along the line. Hell, maybe he's even next year's Titan.

That Unicron art of his robot mode standing in front of his planet mode is preexisting art recycled from the Covenant of Primus book. It should not be taken at face value as a sign of things to come for his IDW appearance.
