Add to the fact that OPrime has died and been resurrected multiple times, provides for several cross continuity points that could be very intriguing.
The Chronicles of Narnia would be a better example of a Christian allegory, whereas Neon Genesis Evangelion is something else entirely and very likely wouldn't be approved of by members of some of more conservative religious groups.
The creators of evangelion have repeatedly stated the religious symbols are only included because they "look cool". Nothing. MORE.
