I'm really enjoying this line. As robots, the TF's are able to do things that normal humanoids can't normally do. Arcee looks like she is able to rotate 360 degrees at the waist, allowing for different firing angles while maintaining forward movement. The wheels for their feet is also a logical extension. Humanoids can only move as fast as their legs can pump back and forth; with wheels as feet, they can dramatically increase their speed and agility. The perfect example there are roller skates/blades and ice skates. With a minimum of action you can move with more speed and agility than normally. Hasrbo, Bay, and ILM are finally starting to incorporate the true capabiilities of robotic life forms into the Transformers, creating extremely unique and different robots- much different than we've ever seen before. And it's getting the typical human response- "different is EVIL!!" Maybe it took an outsider like Bay to come up with these ideas...who knows. I think kids are going to enjoy the figs- which is really all that matters as they still provide for 95% of sales.
As for the individual figs, Arcee could have been done better. I don't really like her colors. Do we have any word on the name for the third bike yet? Jolt looks awesome, though i think the legs are mistransformed. Repaints already? Greeeaaattt. Blaze Master looks awesome and the twins look fantastic. One thing on those two: is each figure deluxe sized, meaning the vehicle mode is more Voyager sized? Or do they come in a two-pack of scout-sized figs that make a deluxe sized vehicle? All in all, I love this line
So do I! You're now my hero, need an extra hand in barricading/fireproofing your house from the angry mob?
Couldn't agree more on the "practicality over appearance" theory. Point being, is it a golden, unbreakable rule where all transformers in all continuities MUST have a 1-to-7 head-to-body size ratio, 2 arms, 2 legs, 2 optics, 8 fingers with 2 thumbs (where exceptions apply to either have a part missing or look like robotic versions of Earth animals)? If that were the case the live movie might as well just be a rehash of G1, Megatron is a gun, Soundwave is a tape deck, mass shifting flies across the screen 24/7, the Constructicons have their G1-accurate but highly unrealistic purple and green colour scheme, etc. etc. etc.
As it's been said, the greatest fear is a fear of the unknown, the different. Because Transformers have been heavily associated with humanesque or animal statures for over 2 decades since the G1 series until now we all have come to stereotype their appearances as mostly human. So yeah, Mr. Bay comes along, throws in alot of wacky designs that break the mold and out comes the knee-jerk "DIFFERENT IS EVIL" mentality. Give it a little breathing space, watch some of the online reviews (and see the mostly positive outlook on the toys by Sean Long and Peaugh), borrow a figure and fiddle with it, then proclaim your conclusion of "THIS LINE IS FAIL" (if you can by that point).
That said, it's a good thing that movie deluxes are cheaper than the animated counterparts, there's so many nice things coming out in this line
