Josh Duhamel weighs in on "Core Mythology" for TF3, is asked about Dinobots

Earlier this month, we brought you the news that Transformers 3 was supposedly going to be bringing back core mythology to the movie franchise.

What that exactly meant for the upcoming film was and still is the subject of some debate, but TF3 star Josh Duhamel was interviewed by MTV News yesterday and offered his take on the script.

"I read it yesterday," he said of the script. "I think that after reading it, I was really pleasantly surprised and happy. They did a great job."

While Duhamel was understandably tight-lipped about plot details, he did reveal that the script includes new robots and story elements from foundational "Transformers" story lines. "Some really cool stuff happens," he said. "They put a lot of time and thought into this. What I think is really cool is they went back into the history of 'Transformers.' They didn't really make anything up. They're using stuff that actually existed in the story from before."

Duhamel's comments confirm what Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told MTV News earlier this year. "You're going to see that great core mythology brought to the fore, and Michael [Bay] is hard at work at making this a reality and we're very excited about it," he said.

Does that mean we might catch a glimpse of the Dinobots, those classic robots who morph into dinosaurs? Duhamel paused when asked that question before admitting, "I can't tell you."

He could tell us that after reading the script, he's got his fingers crossed for some more screen time in this third installment of the franchise. "It all depends on what happens in the editing room," he said. "I hope so. I think I've got to butter up Michael Bay a little bit more."

Sounds good, but I'd be very surprised if we see the Dinobots in TF3. You never know, though.

I'm gonna say right now that I think Dinobots will in fact be in TF3. I think Bay's "I hate them" speech a while ago was a huge ass swerve and that Dinobots were planned for this movie for some time.

Remember that Bay does like to play with us, like him saying before that Megatron would only appear in ROTF as a flashback, or however he phrased that.

well furman had to change the name "laserbeak" to buzzsaw in the nefarious mini at the last minute so i reckon you can consider HIM in TF3 at least.

personally i love the idea of ol LB pearching on megs arm again, simply from a fanboy POV.

On the film itself i reckon dinobots are a cert for it. if only becuase now is he first time they can do it. the bots cover got blown big time in ROTF , the whole world knows theyre here so whats the point of disugis now if rolling out devestating force is on the table, and the dinos have that in spades.

i have to say too that this continual reference to "Transformers history" screams film version of some classic story. a little like how x men 3 was essesntially the dark phoenix sage without the aliens mixed with the cure storyline.

hopefully it wont turnout to be as much bollocks as that was, but something like "target 2006" tweaked for the movieverse could be great fun. ok you;d have to substitute certain characters for others(prime standing in for magnus, essentally cutting out operation volcano ) but it IS do able.

in fact i really hope they are doing one of the classic tales as lets be honest, there hasnt exactly been great character development from the first two films in any shape or form.

what this franchise needs is genuine drama, mystery, suspense and character.

the comics in particular had that hands down.

just for the love of christ DONT have unicron, it'd be the death of the franchise as he's untoppable.

why not have Unicron?

this is "bayformers" after all. its not like he'd actually be a humongous robot that turns into a planet and eats other planets. going by the past two movies, he'd probably have the same name, maybe some similar physical features and thats it. i'm sure Bay would have him transform into some huge earthbound thing though but yeah.

remember, these are the same people who originally had Frenzy be Soundwave before they realized the uproar that woulda caused and changed the name. lol

"went back into the history of 'Transformers."

I think it's because of the new writer. I think he's a real TF fan and not like those other two writers who do nothing but destroy canon. This one will be good.

A "no comment" on the Dinobots huh? Hmmm...

I will wager that, if we see the Dinos, we will see everyone's favorite one-eyed bot Shockwave...the Dinos and SHockwave have been linked in the Marvel series AND the new IDW series.
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

Uuh, isn't that pretty much what they already did with the first two films? Might not of used those ideas correctly (see below) and as well (see the films) as they should have, but still. Josh Duhamel should be a politician - he's good at using many words, but actually saying little.

"You're going to see that great core mythology brought to the fore"

Oh yeah? Kinda like the original 13 being pointlessly reduced to 7? That kinda "core mythology"?

Just because the core methos is there doesnt mean the movie will be good. It all depends on writing & directing, something the first 2 movies have lacked. Bay could do a shot for shot remake any TF episode or the first movie and it could still suck. And if i remember correctly some of the actors said ROTF was going to be good. Only way im going to put any optimism into this movie is if they give the script to a random TF fan and they say its good.

I wish the writers of the movies would realize that we don't need them to be dinosaurs anymore. We want the characters. They've existed as other things before and we've accepted them. They're warbots; make them tanks or something.

Do you really believe that? You know fans won't be happy unless Grimlock was a T-Rex and Swoop was a Pteranadon.

I just want Prowl to finally show up in the movie, preferably with a fight with Barricade.

I actually liked both movies, and i like michael bay as a director. But, people who say michael bay sucks (ive seen this alot, dont give me hate) because he "ruined" transformers and "raped" my childhood, dont stop and think: "well gee, he didnt write the whole thing, so why dont we blame the writers." again, im not saying everybody has said this. But, i think since Kruger's a TF fan, that he'll bring out some good stuff. I have high hopes for TF3, and it doesnt look like its false hope. I'd like to see more of the classic characters in the new movie, like prowl, sunstreaker, and wheeljack. Maybe even some G2 bots.

I liked both movies. Of course, there were things I would have changed (like trading the Fallen and most of the 2007 Decepticons for the Seekers and Shockwave) but overall I was happy to see a franchise I loved become "cool" again. There's no doubt that the first two movies were made more for the purpose of selling tickets than to appease lifelong TF fans, but honestly how could people realistically expect any differently?

People who think "Michael Bay raped my childhood" need to see some other films from the past such as teh Super Mario Bros. movie and the He-man/Masters of the Universe movie.

It could have been soooooo much worse.

NO KIDDING. He-Man was horrid, I remember how much that one let me down as a kid. And Super Mario was a mess too. With TF we got half decent movies at least.

Oh gosh..not another off topic movie debate...

On topic, this all sounds cool, if the DinoBots are in it...GOOD, we can get awesome toys of them...
I like that they're using some real stuff, hopefully this means no more mis-named characters.
