Which is an odd position to take, given TF comics would be Nothing without Furman. Other than the work of Bob Budiansky, who is noted for not actually caring about Transformers, even when he wrote it and his simplistic US Marvel series. No one did more to make TF comics viable, to flesh the characters out beyond toy bios and one dimensional Sunbow interpretations.

I'm curious as to who you think has done more than the two primary TF comic writers. Given no one came before them >:oP

The cartoon was leagues better than anything Furman wrote.

 Good One! But seriously though, The Real Answer? Considering the best Sunbow ever achieved was The Movie, no one actually rates the writing...

Furman is like any other person who works on a single franchise for an extended period of time. They write some good stuff, some bad stuff, and often as time goes on finds they find themselves running out of ideas and spinning their wheels. It happens to most creatives. Even Shakespeare eventually wrote Henry VIII.

Absolutely. The disparity can be quite alarming at times. I mean I was surprised that Stormbringer and Re-G1 were written by the same person. Given (from what I've read so far) Re-G1 is lacklustre, at best.

I never got into re-g1 it felt needless. Actually it also felt like a bad case of "be careful what you wish for

@Galactic the writing in the cartoon was of its time, I.e. no different than other toons in that time period (though I can and will argue for dungeons and dragons being a superior cartoon). The comics got more leeway and got to go to crazier places as a result (for better or worse of course)

Dungeons & Dragons was fantastic. In hindsight, easily among the best cartoons of the 80's. I'd also rate it higher than Transformers. Peter Cullen's best role too.

The real answer is that there isn't a Transformers comic written that's as good as "More than Meets the Eye" or "The Ultimate Doom".

We all know that the Cartoon is the definitive version MOST people remember when it comes to G1. More people saw the cartoon than read the crappy comics. More people want to meet the voice actors of the toon than the bozos like Furman who write the books.

That right there says which is definitively better.

It's fine if you want to like the comics and Furman's bad writing, but claiming his writing is better is pure nonsense. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

I don't think you even like Transformers...

I also think those Rose Tinted Googles are on too tight. All G1 cartoons and comics were bad, to varying degrees. Good enough to sell toys to 3-10 year olds, that's it. For an adult to think otherwise.. is just precious.

Anyway back to Unicron. How long after FCBD until the series proper starts?

FYI, when a staff member pulls people up for drifting off-topic, that's an indication to get on topic.

Making your last line on-topic when 90% of your post was off-topic doesn't count, not to mention how baiting it was.

I'm growing very tired of this tactic that a number of members are doing, just so they can have "the final say". It stops now.

Any further off-topic posts, will be split off and warnings issued.

At least we found a common ground :D

Also, I had a brain storm last night: Unicron is attacking ROM's homeworld, and then Earth, and it was implied he destroyed LV-117. What if Unicron is hunting down and eating the planets that Shockwave planted ores on? He planted those ores there as they were the resting place of the 13 Primes, and what if Unicron tries to eat them so as to gain power to defeat Primus with ease?

Also, with this being the end of the line, there are all kinds of scenarios. In that one Marvel alternate timeline, Unicron won, he ate Cybertron, and Galvatron had Earth to rule, and killed Rodimus Prime. And then that Galvatron ended up in the original Marvel, RG1, and other variations on that timeline. And lest we forget RG1 did end pretty definitively while still leaving open a potential future story.

So all kinds of options. I'm thinking they may go with the colonies and the hasbro verse all team up, and at heavy cost defeat him, but in doing so they forge an alliance that leaves things in a good place.

The thing is (A) We don't even know if a rivalry exists between Unicron and anybody within IDWverse?, and (B) Cybertron/Primus summoned him. So maybe Unicron is Cleaning House for Primus. All the planets "touched" by the Transformers?

Exactly. Maybe the reboot is caused by Primus, through Unicron. Unicron could even be Primus in IDWverse?

Maybe it's the visionaries who summon Unicron though as a act of defiance (aka they are bad losers) there's one issue left and the press release does list it as important reading material saying something about Unicron being summoned...would put it past them to make one issue out if the five parts to actually be important to everything else.

Though Unicron having created primus is a theory I've been mulling lately

A running theme in IDW has been the idea of Expansion. How previous attempts by Nova Prime, Shockwave, Megatron etc have been thwarted before they came to pass. Perhaps Unicron is the final failsafe by Primus to halt the now growing expansion of the influence of the Cybertronian race across the galaxy?

:D Depends how many planets are on Unicron's hit list? As long as he consumes Earth before the reboot, he'll have achieved something positive in IDWverse.

I like theory crafting, outside the box. Conventional story telling is nice, but it's the safe bet, the easy option for writers. Comments I've largely read so far, the general assumption is Unicron is going to be exactly the same as he was before. Given how long they have taken to use him, I wouldn't bet on it. Not if the IDW treatment of Thunderwing or Auto-Megatron was any indication.

A small plug but, where ever those who are currently reading my story over in the Fan-Fic thread, think it's going.. you might be in for a surprise.
I like to see subverted expectation in storytelling. Ever since I was younger and I watched an episode of the Twilight Zone, called "A small talent for war".

You have to be really careful how you use storytelling like that, always do it and eventually people will lose interest, especially if your endings mess them around. Use it sparingly and you get epic moments like the end of the usual suspects or Fight Club. I mean it could be argued that last jedi is an example of subverted storytelling and look what happened there.

It's all about risks at the end of the day . And which risk will reward with the greatest pay off, if the safe route gives them the impression of the best result then they'll go with that.

You are right though about us assuming he'll be the same as before, I mean we have very few facts about this Unicron...at least till free comic book day.

Forgive me, but I could have swore that the signal sent out that Unicron heard and was awakened by was the result of Merklynn activating the Talisman and beginning the transformation of Cybertron into new Prysmos, not Primus himself
