Now, if I was doing it, I would mention the original Optimus' trailer, and the attempt to make the Scramble City leaders have a base mode, each of which was a fail (well, Onslaught's wasn't too bad).

Can't come up with any that isn't G1, but I'm old school. My first transformer was Starscream in Christmas 1984.

What a fantastic article! My wife and I are loving reading the list! My guess for one of the remaining alts is:

Heads!

:KREMZEEK:

I think we know firetrucks/rescue equipment is also on the list somewhere just for the sole reason of RiD Prime. Also, would gestalts count as an alt mode?
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

There's a LeMans spychanger and I missed it?!? That's a must buy.

I'm amazed by the number of supportive comments and fantastic suggestions in this thread. That said, it's time for round two of

Honourable Mentions
(or "I could've been a contender.")

Image
"While my arms fly into space my body will go round and round on my wings and legs."

I'm gonna go a bit tl;dr for a minute: When I was young, my mum taught me a valuable lesson about saving money (that utterly failed to impact my adult life). While visiting relatives we spotted Metroplex who usually retailed for 40 quid IIRC on sale for 20 quid. She agreed to buy it on the proviso that I don't open the toy until I'd saved up enough money. Since my pocket money then was 2 quid a week I spent 10 weeks staring at the outside of a box. It was totally worth it though.

Although it's important for an army to have a good, powerful base, it kinda sucks to BE that base. After all, you have people inside you the whole time using your toilets and scuffing up your floors, and the only time you get to stretch your legs is when there's some kind of massive threat approaching. It would be like Superman's secret identity being not Clark Kent, but instead a filing cabinet at the Daily Planet offices.

Image
Now DJing at a club near you.

Really construction vehicles should be on any good list of Alt modes but to be honest, I've never had much interest in them. For me there are several important factors to a good Alt; coolness, sleekness, speed, firepower, cuteness, quirkiness or being a tanuki all ranked high while practicality ranked low.

While I have nothing against construction vehicles (G1 Mixmaster is a Shakespearian witch in transforming robot form and the likes of Armada Hoist and Energon Landmine are great), the thought of writing a full entry about them, having to include all of them, arguing about the different international names of excavators and trying to make the whole thing entertaining, vaguely accurate and funny just kills me. As I said before if anyone else wants to write a full-length Honourable Mention I totally support that.

Image
"FOR THE COLONY!"

And it's the same for fire engines really. RiD Prime is fantastic, G1 Hotspot is okay, but the rest bore me to tears.

Image
"You can call me...Wheeliejumper."

Mindwipe is one of my favourite G1 figures but he isn't enough to outweigh the camel-faced Ratbat, the ugly Sonar or Nightscream.

Image
"Da da da Look at my head. It's so crazy, look at my head. I got big ol' head, hey ho. All right show's over, I'm tired."

I would include heads, but a warrior doesn't need a head, just a good strong body.

Okay so entry #3 will be coming reeeeeal soon.

It's time for entry number three and for a minute I'm gonna get preachy (for a change).

Transformers needs humour.

Admittedly a lot of the "funnier" episodes of G1 are terrible. In fact B.O.T. is the second most painful thing in the world, next to Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire. If I were trying to introduce a new fan to Transformers I would probably skip most, if not all G1. The early comics were just as bad with campy plotlines about car washes of doom (no, really) and Transformer wrestling matches (again, really).

It's not like it's a good thing when Transformers is as campy as Carnage In C-Minor or the Japanese Beast Wars dub. But some of the best and most acclaimed episodes and issues of Transformers balanced maturity, humour and heart well. Code of Honour, Dark Awakening, pretty much all of Animated. Even Michael Bay understands that the heart of Transformers is humour even if he thinks that should take the form of comedy underwear. At the other end of the spectrum we have Dreamworks' version of G1 which surgically removes the "childishness" of Transformers and ironically just resembles a kid banging his figures together while barking dialogue. If you have an Optimus who doesn't have the heart to practice basketball with his underlings and make deadpan (but genuinely funny) jokes about lockpicking then you just have a toy that mutters dry rhetoric when you pull its string.

In short, whenever someone suggests a "gritty" and "mature" reboot of the franchise about giant transforming mechanical aliens with names ending in -tron, my fists twitch.

#3: Penguins

Image
Man, this image is working hard for me.

So, why all this blurb? Well I know I'm an irreverant, iconoclastic kind of guy and I was worried that people might think this was a joke entry. And of course, it is. But Transformers is, at its best, a joke series so it's appropriate.

Anyway, there's only one Penguinformer in existence: Break. He's part of the crazier end of Japanese Beast Wars where he was surrounded by rabbits and giraffes. He's a rather tragic shellformer but his inner robot mode is also white and black with a hint of yellow, which just screams "I'm a penguin, dammit!" He also has a rather beefy arm cannon which becomes his butt in penguin mode.

Penguins are fantastically cute but aren't really fantastic warriors. That said, penguins are amazing in arctic and underwater environments, which sadly highlights the one, single flaw in this figure: his penguin head and feet aren't sufficiently articulated for him to go into a swimming or sliding pose meaning he's stuck mid waddle.

As an added bonus he also transforms into a targetmaster cannon (Penguin cannon...FIRE!) to be held by his larger comrades. Here his practically perfect penguin-pooping skills are stretched to the max.

I'm sure that for some the fact that Penguins are being ranked above tanks and T-rexes but really penguins make everything better. Otherwise that one movie would've been called "March of the Nothing", Batman Returns would've been ninety-minutes of Batman having post-row-sex with Catwoman (D'oh!) and 2006-2007 would've been tragically void of twee CGI movies. Put that in your penguin cannon and smoke it!

Only two more entries to go. The next one's been suggested a couple of times and it's gonna be a really long one so please be patient.

Break seems like he'd bea slightly better dressed Aquaman. Sure, he can fire missiles out his bum, but there're Bots who can become planes, tanks and missile platforms, so really, he's a guy who has a fairly useless alt mode, combined with a secondary ability that probably isn't as effective as a bunch of other guys.

On the other hand, penguins are cool!

It's complicated. In Europe there were eight water-squirting figures: four 'Bots, four 'Cons. Deluge was the heroic LeMans. Then for some reason in America only the four Autobots were released, all being slightly redecoed and two of them becoming Decepticons. The LeMans mold was still an Autobot but was now called Drench while the name Deluge got transferred to the F1 car who used to be an Autobot called Speedstream but was now a Decepticon called, well, Deluge.
