That Megatron looks good, but looking at that Brawl makes me glad I grabbed the first leader class figure 10 years ago!

I think them's bad stock photos cos I seen both figures look better in the toy fair type pics. Definitely buying Megatron even though I had hoped he'd be painted silver and such. Think his 'toes' are meant to seperate a bit further than shown there? I dunno. But yeah definitely getting that one. Brawl's a maybe.

Seems like Brawl has a few nickels on his feet to keep him standing. Bit concerning.

Does anyone else think that Brawl is a new mold based on/scaled down from the old leader figure? It's probably the hole in the front of the tank that reminds me of the old leader. I'm still getting both as soon as I see them in stores :D ;)^

Looks completely new to me.

That megs looks like an improvement over the 2009 voyager (though I did have fun with that toy) Brawl though looks very badly mis-transformed, are the photographers that pressed for time they can't spend a moment or two to fully work out the instructions?

The photographer thing is a classic. And I can bet that sometime or most of the time, they don't even have any instructions and must play it by hear.

Isn't everything in this line a new mold? Bar 76 Camaro Bee, which takes engineering from Age of Extinction Bee, everything else is a new mold.

As to whether it takes cues from the Leader class Brawl, I would say its hard to take a defined vehicle mode, and turn it into a defined robot mode and not have similarities to other figures that do the same thing.

But no, There are quite a few differences, such as the placement of the tank treads the way the turret transforms and ends up on his arms etc... Its very much a new mold, not using anything from the other 2 molds other than looking like Brawl.

Deluxe

With that said, it does look pretty good, and does make me want to get it, if only to see how far engineering has come in 10 years. I still own the 2007 deluxe Brawl, and really want to see them side by side.

Got my Grimlock from Amazon today, and he really is gorgeous. The paint apps make his details pop even better than the pictures, and his transformation is a breeze.

I only have one problem with mine, and unfortunately it's kind of a big one. The hinge on the back "skirt" on mine is extremely loose. Not a big deal in bot mode, but in beast mode it's just supposed to fold up under the tail and stay put, there's no pegs or anything for it, and mine keeps flopping down and giving him an ugly butt flap.

It's rubbery plastic, so I've kind of half-fixed it by folding the tips of the skirt over the top of some of the spikes on his tail to hold it in place, but I'm worried over time that will warp the plastic. Anyone having a similar issue?

Overall i am very disappointed in this series. The only figure that is decent is Blackout IMO.

We haven't seen Deluxe Bee Movie Bumblebee, Voyager Ironhide, or Voyager RotF Starscream with the marks all over his jet mode. Ironhide is supposed to be wave 3 in September and Screamer is wave 4 in November. Bee was supposed to be wave 1, but where the movie got pushed back to December there's most definitely a Deluxe wave 3 and 4 since they wouldn't put that figure in wave 2. Plus a Japanese retailer order list included two more unnamed leaders. So the line is definitely running to the end of the year and there's likely several figures we haven't seen yet. No Voyager Bonecrusher, though. Not in 2018 anyway. If the line continues into 2019, you never know.

Emerje

Would guess one of those two unnamed leaders is Grindor. Do the Blackout mold in lighter gray plastic and new head and you're done. We already know they're doing repaints with Starscream getting his tattoos, and I'm sure some people would want Grindor to reenact that forest fight from RotF anyway. That's easy money, and I don't see Hasbro passing that up.

So really, its just a question of who the last leader would be. Constructicons would be cool, but they're such minor characters in the big scheme of the movies that I doubt it. Would guess something like the Fallen, another Dinobot, or a Jetfire that can combine with the voyager Optimus somehow. Not a lot of other BIG bots that make sense for that size if they're trying to keep stuff in scale.

Its the TLK Bee. Also, Crowbar has the same pieces in alt mode as Berserker.

Image

Voyager Starscream is based on the DOTM deluxe and Ratchet shares the same transformation as the DOTM deluxe but the molding detail is different.

Image

So I would say about half these toys are not 100% fully done from scratch. Half are based on previous toys for these characters.

Oh and Thundercracker is just a redeco with a new head.

Strange how the two Ratchets look about the same size there but I have both the Studio one and the red version of that DotM figure and the Studio one is taller.

Forgot about Crowbar. Yes he's ostensibly the same Suburban mold with minor mods to the transformation.

I don't quite see Ratchet as being the same as the old Deluxe Ratchet. It may look similar, but many things end up in different places, and many many molding differences, as well as difference in how the torso transforms for me to consider that the same mold.

And yes, obviously thundercracker is just repainted from Nitro with a new head.

So o.k, not all are new molds. 10 out of the 13 figures are definitely new molds.

Is it weird that the display stands make me feel more compelled to buy more from this series than multi-figure gimmicks like Combiners ever have? Hm, it sounds weird when I typed it out just now but I think cos the figures themselves aren't affected by it in any way (most combiner figures I often feel get sacrificed in some way for the gimmick, particularly the dinobots) but to display them all in their supplied stands makes me want more cos they look gorgeous on my shelf but I don't absolutely have to so I don't feel forced. That's just my opinion and tastes though. :)

Overcracker still missing a G1 Hot Rod in that bold firey sig image. :)

Hey, got a couple of quick questions:

1. Can someone clarify the difference between the Studio Series and the MB line from Takara? Based on some google research, I think SS are slightly new molds that are influenced by old molds, and MB are redecos of old molds? Is that correct? Despite geared for different markets, this all still seems a bit redundant.

2. What's going to happen with SS Thundercracker? I imagine distribution will be poor with him...

Movie the Best is nothing but old molds and Takara-only. Studio Series is a whole new beast and shared between Hasbro and Takara.

nycPrime wrote:2. What's going to happen with SS Thundercracker? I imagine distribution will be poor with him...
He's a TRU exclusive, but the timing of his release couldn't have been worse since he came out right when all U.S. TRUs are closing and no longer taking orders of new product from Hasbro or anyone. Not every TRU placed orders for Thundercracker since some stores were set to close when others weren't, before it was decided that all of them would be closing.

1. Movie the best are repaints, and re-releases of old molds. Its exclusive to Takara, and was in the works long before Studio series was even a thing.

Studio series is a joint effort between Hasbro and Takara, with both releasing the exact same figures. As said, mostly new molds, a couple of molds based on older engineering, and 1 repaint with a new head Thundercracker.

2. Thundercracker, is likely going to be a pain to find, and unscrupulous types are going to have a feel day with whatever they can find of him.

Already going for $100 on Amazon, don't expect to see it get better. In areas where TRU is not yet closed down, expect the amount of him to be found to be sold out fast. Decent mold, great paint scheme, interesting head, and exclusive to a dying chain... not a pretty picture.

Studio Series Thundercracker - Amazon.com $99.99

I have the exact same issue with mine. I've been tucking the skirt (folded) into the slot where the tail comes out of the mace, and it holds. Unfortunate though, a simple peg underneath could have solved this issue.

Why? Movie the Best has no bearing on Studio Series. Movie the Best even began long before Studio Series was a even thing, starting even before The Last Knight's toyline began. Movie the Best isn't even being sold in Hasbro markets. Takara does their own things on their own while Hasbro does theirs with Takara just like always.

I have no idea how the toy industry or Takara works. If Takara had plans for Jetfire or any other figure for that matter, then it'll probably be released independent of anything in the SS line. Without having that insight, I'm presuming that the odds seem less likely Takara would release 2 of the same characters with similar (though technically different) molds. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. I think I'm in the market for a movie Jetfire, and the MB version is a bit more than I'm comfortable with paying.

Takara's releasing everything from Studio Series that Hasbro is so far (minus Thundercracker), including all the same characters in the same bodies that they already released in Movie the Best: Ratchet, Jazz, ROTF Megatron, ROTF Optimus, Starscream, Grimlock, Lockdown, etc.

I thought that was down to people complaining about Megatron's design from the first movie? Hence why each movie he's appeared in so far, he's had a different look. Also the studio series has taken characters and versions of them from across the live action movies. Actually I think this megs might be the only RotF representation we have for now.

I just got the wave 1 Voyagers and Leaders yesterday (review incoming :-D ), and I love them. However, I have an issue with my Grimlock. The coattails/flap that forms the underside of his tail sits too loosely on the hinge for the friction to overcome gravity. This results in it just hanging down to the ground in his beast mode. For such an amazing figure, this is a huge let down. I was wondering, has anyone else had this problem?

I don't have the figure yet don't know what the hinge part looks like but the usual tricks to stiffen loose joints (for example with nail polish) might work? I've used it on many a loose part whether an old action figure that had gotten super floppy over the years, or a modern action figure with QC issue.

That could be cool. Could be a voyager Prime likely slightly retooled from the current Studio figure to stay in scale but sold closer to Leader price point to have a big trailer that houses his attachable flight pack and a ton of badass weaponry. Don't want the whole trailer becoming the flight pack (or crazy angel thing like that Ultimate Optimus Prime figure) but just open up to be a total weapons rack and display piece all the other autobots can grab heavier firepower if they need it.

Considering what they've pulled off with this line in regards to Grimlock and especially Blackout, I have faith in Takara/Hasbro to pull a rabbit out of the hat, so to speak.

It's weird, because the instructions make it look like it should just fold up under the tail and stay in place, but that joint is so wide and the rubber is so heavy I don't get how it could possibly do that. Even if it wasn't so loose, it would get worn out really quick. Makes me think there's a missing step in the instructions, or there was some kind of last minute change from regular plastic to rubber and they didn't properly account for the extra weight.

So I got Grimlock in the mail today, and as he is my first Studio Series figure, and he and Thundercracker will be my only ones for a bit once he gets here as I intend to patiently wait to see the rest in stores.

But enough with that, let's get some thoughts, shall we?

We'll start with Dino mode. It is large and impressive. Not perfect granted, but it is still a very impressive piece, and far better than any movie Grimlock before him (and for that matter, better than most Grimlocks before him). The paint work is spectacular, he has oodles of paint to look at, and all the robot bits are pretty well hidden away or repurposed in plain sight enough to be barely noticeable.

Transformation is fun, and I like that he takes a bit after TLK Scorn. Oh and he doesn't need to partsform, another big plus over the previous leader.

The robot mode is where this guy truly shines though, it is masterpiece level in paintwork and gorgeousness. He looks insanely movie accurate from every angle, and I love how intimidating he looks. While is posing is somewhat limited and not as wide ranging as other figures, he can still move a more than acceptable amount.

In summary, he is a great example of a guy who needed the better movie toy treatment, and he got it, spectacularly. Easily recommended at retail price guys, no need to be skimpy with this mother. And finally: he is loads better overall than pretty much every Grimlock toy ever, and definitely better than any Grimlock I own.

I really like Blackout, he looks great. The hands bug me a lot though. By any chance are the hands assembled backwards? It seems like they'd be a lot better if they were flipped around. Unfortunately due to the style of pin, extracting that pin to try it out is beyond my skill level.

Received Blackout today. I find the helicopter mode to me a panel-y fiddly mess. As I'm popping one part in, another part is fighting to pop out. Are others experiencing the same? Maybe I'm mistransforming it.

Glad that Grimlock is everything you were hoping for D-Max, he looks great and I look forward to him. Especially since it could rinse out the bad taste I have in my mouth after handling Studio Series Bumblebee and Crowbar.

That Bumblebee is easily the worst toy I have handled in the past few years. He just falls apart and is one hell of a chore to transform. I ended up just removing the piece that didnt cooperate ( the roof of the car) and then plugged it back in when I was done. I cant believe such an engineering mistep would be released by hasbro. A pin would have made all the difference in the world.

I do like Sarscream though. He works really really well for a voyager class and it doesnt at all feel less complex from using the engineering of a smaller class. And man, they used that same technique for the alt mode paint job that Takara used with the recent Beast Wars toys, giving it all that texture. Super cool and well done. And the plastic has a great quality to it. Its everything I would want from a transformer and my favourite toy of the year so far (with Bumblebee being the worst).

This confirm my two most wanted for the first wave: Starscream and Grimlock.

Come on out over here already!

The rear side of the pelvis has a small rectangular slot. The arm that holds the big round dome over his head in robot mode has 2 rectangular pegs, one smaller than the other. Make sure that smaller peg is tabbed into that slot, it should help.

I experience that with Crowbar.

I was wondering about those pegs. I was watching a video on YouTube and it made a click noise when it pegs. I couldn't for the life of me get it to click in. When you tab it in, is it secure? Will try again tomorrow when my thumbs don't hurt as much.

Hey boss, I pulled his hand off and mounted it back on the arm 90degs over. It's not pretty but I think it looks and works better.

I'll do a quick write-up soon.

That would be awesome my friend. Looking forward to it. How you have the hands is how I wish they were by default. I wonder if there was a way to knock out the pin easily and flip the hands around if it would hamper with the transformation at all.

I agree about Starscream but I'm kinda disappointed you hate Bumblebee that much. I've enjoyed mine a lot. The roof thing could be fixed (and mine seems better now I applied a bit of nail polish to make that joint more snug and less prone to popping off). Only issue I have is getting the hood into place in both modes. I feel I'm missing some step to make it easier but not sure what but I love the toy a lot both in car and awesome robot mode and he's spent a lot of time on my desk in the past couple weeks getting transformed and posed a lot.
